Windows Explorer won't read external HD

I hoping someone here will be able to help me out.

I installed a external hardrive about two months and it has been working fine. However, the other night while ripping an audio CD to it, I simultaneously renamed a folder on the external HD. This caused Windows Explorer to crash each time I tried to view the files on the HD. When I rebooted my PC, the HD drives are not appearing in the folders list.

I spent last night uninstalling and reinstalling the software for the HD and did a system restore from a week or so ago. No joy. Device Manager tells me that the HD is working properly and that the drivers are installed and yet f*&^ing Windows Explorer won't see the shagging thing.

Anyone got any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong or is the HD borked??? The HD is a Maxtor Onetouch 160GB.

    Any help gratefully received.

Go into Computer Manager and Disk Management. It sounds like the Disk Drive letter has been a little bit mixed up. If the disk appears in there, remove the drive letter, reboot, go back in, it will probably have reasigned it, if not do it yourself. Should allow Explorer access to it.

Also check if you can see the contents of the HDD in something other then Windows Explorer. Bring up a Command Prompt (Start/Run/Cmd if XP or 2K) and type Dir x:\ (x being the drive letter of the HDD).

Also try run a chkdsk against the Drive - also from a Command Prompt.

Thanks guys. I don't think it is a disk letter issue as I tried disk management and it only sees my C: drive. Even if the HD had been reassigned a different letter, Explorer should maybe of picked it up. Unless I am mistaken.

r00t69: thanks for those tips, I will try them this evening and report back...

If you have checked Disk Management and it does not pick up the HDD then none of my tips will help either. Is the device seen in Device Manager? Any chance you have another PC/Laptop to plug the HDD into?

It sounds like you enabled the security on the onetouch. The drive letter wont be assigned to drive until you unlock it.

If you click on my computer you should get a maxtor icon on the right, right click and unlock.

If thats not it, mail maxtors support, I had a problem with my onetouch going corrupt on me and they came back quick enough. BTW, if your onetouch is fat32, I strongly recommend formatting NTFS, Id lost data 3 times before doing this.

Yes Device manger picks it up alright and says it is operating properly.

I have emailed Maxtor also but was asking here as I am not sure I will get a response. I have the drive partitioned and formatted in NTFS.
