    Hey everyone,

I'm hoping ye can offer me some advice on packing.

I head away to America next week for three weeks and I envisage myself packing too much. :-) I am prone to this even when travelling in Ireland so I would like to hear some tips from those here.

How to handle cosmetics? Shampoo's, conditioners, gels etc I'm female so there is a long list to this lol

Also, is there a need to pack some things along the lines of first aid??

When in America we are travelling mostly by trains. Any tips for what might be essential for this part?

Would it be a good idea to only pack the essentials here and buy other stuff needed in America? Something which has been suggested to me.

    Many thanks for reading,
    A.

I find this is a personal thing and we all need different things but I was about to reply until I seen the "female" bit. Not even going to try start :)

well as i always say, there is nothing here that you cant buy in america. in fact you will get a lot better choice a lot cheaper. cloths, shoes, cosmetics etc...all cheaper. travel light especially if you are going on trains. the last thing u need is to be hawling a heavy bag with you. weather is quite warm there so little cloths will do! my advice is if you are going for two weeks bring enough for one and bring back! thats what i always do! :)

Put bathroom stuff in a ziploc bag, ive travelled many times and always used them. Bodywash or whatever always ended up spilling for some reason but doesnt leave the ziploc bag so doesnt destroy everything else.
Trains are comfortable mostly, but keep aware to your stuff.Try not to bring too much with you if travelling on trains, it can be troublesome to bring so much with you, so keep it light and yes get the essentials when arriving, you should be ok.

Decide what you want to pack..then get rid of half of it, & double the ammount of mony you think you'll need.

Thanks all for the advice. Ziploc idea is great. And as for the money here's hoping my new credit card and loan can get me by. lol

There are lots of good tips on One Bag.com. In general, it's quite feasible (and far more comfortable) to travel with a single piece of carry-on. And if it's just an anonymous holdall, you won't look like a tourist when stepping off the train in a new city or attract unwanted attention.

No need to cover all eventualities when packing for the States - a single visit to a drugstore will take care of any sudden needs.

Ear-plugs often come in handy. Some good thick books that you can discard as you go along (those bargain classics for a euro or two). You can decant shampoo and such into little travel bottles that you can find in the likes of Boots.

It's telling me pratically everything I need to know and more.
