Stop Windows from randomly searching the floppy drive

    Hi,

Can anyone suggest how to stop Windows XP from randomly searching the floppy drive? It seems to only have occured after I used a burned CD-ROM with pics on it ... not sure if this may have had an affect. I was thinking it may be associated with the index service, as I experience problems with this when opening the CD-ROM.

    Cheers,
    NastyThong

You've just answered your own question.. control panel->administrator tools->services ... right-click indexing service and set it to manual (if its set to automatic).. and then stop the service.

You'd also want to run a virus check, I don't think many virus's still do this but many used to keep checking if there was a floppy disk in to copy itself to. There's links to free AV software in the free software sticky

Thanks for your help. Indexing Service was already set to Manual and stopped. Will run a virus check asap and hope for the best.

I get something like this at work.
Win 98 machine, it just seems to randomly check the floppy and the whole system seems to freeze for a second or 2.

Tried Symantec virus scan but it found nothing. Any more ideas please?

You could just stick a floppy disk in to keep it quiet,
One of your running apps is trying to save or write to the FDD, you could disable the drive in the BIOS if you dont need it or find which program is causing the problem and change the setting
