So what happens at these type of events? Anyone experienced?

Do you just drive down and park your car in field and everyone checks out everyone else's motor?

Or do you have to register a car to get it into a venue? I've never actually been to one of these things and am curious to hear how they work in practice. Not too bothered (or deluded) about entering any competitions but don't want to leave my old baby outside after driving all the way down in it! ;)

    Cheers guys!

Normally, if you're going to show your car you'll need to register. From then on, you just hang out and look at other cars and field questions about your own. Unless you have yet another MGB, in which case nobody's interested (only kidding ;))

Rallies are a little different - there you typically register, spend an hour farting about shooting the breeze, then drive for some distance to a venue for more farting about, then maybe another drive, then home. Mostly people use them to exercise their classics - precious things that are sitting in a garage most of their lives. For e.g. the Blessington rally had a guy in a 1912 wooden wheeled Renault - when I passed him he was belting up a hill at close to vmax with a big grin on his face. OK it was only 30mph, but I'm sure that car was not doing that every day. I wondered at the attraction of driving 100km in my DS (i've driven almost 30,000 since I got it) but when you see these truly special cars you see the attraction. I enjoyed it for the variety of machinery you see.

I haven't heard of the mosney one. Is there a Fiat owners club in Ireland? The marque specific rallies can be really useful for meeting other owners and learning from experts. Also, sometimes driving other cars like your own can show you how good, or bad, your car is in the grand scheme of things. So while your focussing on chopping up your dash (still can't forgive you that ;)) you might instead see the need for suspension work, or body work, or whatever.

Then there's actual timed rallies - v_deniso was at one on Sunday in his XK120 (any pictures?). There was a 7.0 Jensen FF, a carrera RS, a Ferrari 308GTB, an e-type, numerous triumphs, MGs, etc. I only saw the start (too hungover to take part), but apparently these are a little more "focussed" than normal rallies in that they are against the clock.

    Nice one DS.

The Mosney show is mentioned favourably by Silvera in the sticky thread above. If I thought it was going to be worth it the timing is good for me to take a spin down. Ominously the IVS website doesn't even mention it on the events page.

I guess what I need now is contact details or a website.

I don't need other old car to know that there's work to be done to mine!

And BTW my dash is still untouched, though I have made some enquiries...

There's a Fiat 500 club, but nothing else Fiat related that I can find - boo.

    Cheers!

    There's a Fiat 500 club

Drooool..... I'm building a garage (hopefully this year). It will be 30' long, and the DS is about 17' long. A 500 will do nicely for the remainder, i reckon!

can you not just put it in your pocket!?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

I could never see the attraction of Fiat 500's to be honest.

And they are changing hands for mad money these days.

My old dear used to drive one when I was a kid. We used to have to get out of the car so it could get up ramps in multi story car parks.

I was at Mosney Show back in 2000 and it was excellent !
It had a great variety of cars, trucks and motorbikes on display. It is organised by the North East Vintage Club and they do an excellent job at that !

I brought up a car to sell and expected to be directed 'down the back' or something, but no, they had a For Sale section just inside the main gate and I was also issued with a metal plaque of the event ! sweet :)

BTW, there is another Fiat club - The Fiat X1/9 Club. Somebody here asked me for contact details - I'll dig them out.
Don't forget The Italian Car Club - it no doubt has many Fiat owners amongst it's ranks !

.....and have you noticed how a certain guy with 'Alfa' in his nickname has copied some of my show comments directly onto another classic forum *cough Octane.ie* !

    Sacriledge!! :)

    I love the Giardinieras (Giardiniere?):
    image121.jpg
    image108.jpg

I almost imported on of these - from the US, believe it or not. The orange one is a cracker. Check out that RHD Goggomobil Van - the only one in existence.

Actually I did - I was wondering if you were the same person!
    Thanks for the info.

    So anyone heading down?
Found a contact number here, so might give them a call to see what the scéal is about arriving on the day.

Can't find contact details for the Italian Car Club, though not sure if I want to as they sound like a curious bunch...
BTW those pics of the Fiat 500s look like a scene from Thomas the Tank Engine... :D

Oh and camerobill - your link is broke! :(

mosney is usully pretty good, because its out of the city areas most of those there are exhibitors so its a bit safer to leave the car and head off to take a peek.

Most shows will ask for pre registration, it helps them organise and helps the cash flow, but so long as you are in Mosney early enough (11 bells start I thik) they will take yuour 15 quid at the gate, you wont get a plastic plate/ornament and free tea and sambos....

we'll be there in our mniis 1966 red mk1, say hi.

    Pearls before swine.... :)

Actually - that Goggomobil is a ringer for Postman Pat's van.

Seriously, the 500 is an absolute classic - I'd rather one than a 2CV, and that says a lot. Nothing to do with Mosney, though, so I'll shut up now.

    Hi ds20prefecture

Although I had a digital camera with me on the day, for some reason none of the pictures came out...Will actually have to study the manual over the weekend...I should be receiving a few pics over the next few day and will post them here once I do.

Was a great day on Sunday, very professionally run event, brilliant route and good variation of cars...everyone else make sure you go next year!

Personally not mad on static shows, went to Trim last year and got bored too quickly...I need the hood down, wind in my hair and a constantly changing view!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,038 ✭✭✭stratos

I personally don't like bringing my classic to shows. Once saw a guy talking to an xk owner whilst his toddler ran his machtbox toy up and down the Jags coachwork. I say do one show once. It can be a long day and you can't generally get your car out if you get fed up.

The runs (er) or rallies are far better you get to drive your old rust bucket with other fabulous cars. I will always remember a day in laois In front of me the sun was dazzling back from a tr6 and a stag. In the rear view, dark clouds brooded over an e type and a wheezing midget. It rained later that day I swear you could hear the rust.

ive been to a few car shows and recently saw a few things that would put me off!! no marshals next or near cars and bunches of young lads and grown men confusing the door handles for barn doors, father smiling as his lovely screaming toddler was jumping around inside a 1920s opentop ford, a complete lack of respect for the cars , no thanks .

everything u said is 100 percent true, :o its something u just have to except when u bring ur car to the shows, why

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,033 ✭✭✭Silvera

I agree, some people just have no idea about respecting somebody else's car - be it classic or modern (Don't talk to me about shopping centre carparks  )

When I have a classic, I will proably attend the odd show - but with a large 'DON'T TOUCH' sign on display ;):D

    camarobill,
I dont think they'd appreciate the brat in the yellow T-shirt from todays show!
I caught his mam trying to lift him into the car. Some people dont give care, Tis not their car and sure isnt that what we bring them for - to let them manhandle them!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

So a bunch of us will be there, like ships in the night ! We'll only know eachother from the description of our cars !

didn't go myself. any pics? anything interesting?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭Jason_G_KE30

Thought it was the best show I've ever been to, my neck's still stiff from all the looking! Seen a lovely red KE30 with 56K on the clock, that was for sale but didn't get to speak to the owner, plus a nice KE30 coupe. Pity some of the cars left before 3 o' clock so I only got a glimpse of them on the way out. My camera was out of film in the first 30 mins! What was everyone else's comments?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,513 ✭✭✭BrianD3

Jason, did you get pics of either of the KE30s and could you scan and post them? Are you a KE30 owner yourself, any pics of it?

If you check through the boards.ie motoring forums you'll find a fair amount of discussion on KE30s. There are a couple of KE30 fans here :D

I wasnt there unfortunately but from what I hear it was fantastic.

I was there too with the Stag, parked alongside a nice, big blue Merc.

Was a great day - equals if not betters the Terenure event. My first time at Mosney. I'll throw some pics up later, need to thumbnail them first.

    My favourites were:

    the copper-coloured Karmann Ghia
    the blue/white split-screen VW bus
    the lovely green Volvo P1800
    all the Ford Granadas
the Celicas (wasn't into '70s cars before, but it's great to see them !)
and the ex-UDR/RIR Landrover with the livery, the wirecutter, bullet-proff glass, confidential phone number on the side etc - made me feel homesick !

A couple of pics from the show.
That orange Mark I Escort was super-clean. I'm not fond of the model, but the quality of restoration was very impressive. I liked that there were quite a few dodgy old rust buckets amongst the gems. Not everything needs to be perfect to offer up enjoyment.

I've just got my photos developed this evening, and I'll hopefully get them scanned in tomorrow. I got some nice ones of the KE30's there plus one older KE20, plus some others. I'm doing some work on my own KE30, I'm afraid the photos aren't worth putting up here :D We actually got the engine going a fortnight ago, only that a needle was blocked in the carbouretor and made the diaphram in the fuel pump give up. I'm getting a new one on Sat, so I'll coax her again. Sounds the business though!

    Welcome to the forum!

    (along with no.1 fan BrianD3)

Looking forward to your KE30 pics.

It was certainly a good show, a bit crowded though !

I got stuck at our Club stand for most of the day and hardly got to see anything, I had a quick 20 minute walk around and that was it !

The standard of cars was generally a lot higher I felt ............my own car looked a total wreck compared to that lot ! :(

Very good pics Jason :D Thanks for posting them.

BTW what is "Toyota TEC" (see the sign in front of the KE20) Is it an owners club?

It gas when you see the amount of worek put into some of those old Corollas. I mean its a well known fact that its not economically vianble to buy a car and do a full resto as you nearly always spend more than the car is worth but with these things it mnust be total financial suicide !

I wouldn't mind but the quality of the bodywork is first class and far better than I have seen on many so called "upmarket" cars !

Fair play to them its really great to see these cars again !

From what you can make out in the photo, I'd hazard 'Toyota Enthusiasts Club'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭Jason_G_KE30

Brian, this TEC is the same as you see stamped on the car / engine itself, may stand for Toyota Engineering Corpration or simillar. The owners and cars were part of a UK based owners club, not certain of the name. I'm starting to realise restoration is not for the faint hearted alright, it's grand if you are competent at most jobs, but if you need specialists, then the fun starts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,513 ✭✭✭BrianD3

I just found the TEC website.
    http://www.toyotacelicasupra-ma61.co.uk/html/toyota_enthusiasts_club.html

The club seems to be mainly Celicas and Supras plus the odd Corolla, Crown and Corona.

BTW just recently I saw a 1975 Crown in Granard Co. Longford. Think it was for sale too. Rare beast :)

Is there much to be done on your restoration Jason? The car will be a good talking point when its done because lots of Irish people remember the old Corollas and would be interested to see one again. Just recently I saw a KE20 being driven on the road and it was attracting a lot of attention from other drivers despite not being immaculate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭Jason_G_KE30

Was just doing the same myself, downloaded an application form!
My Car is quite solid generally, there was a lot of work done on the engine when my Uncle owned it about 12 years ago. I've replaced the timing chain, water pump, dist cap, and most recently fuel pump, but the carbouretor still isn't perfect. I've located a KE20 not too far away at home in Cavan, and the engine and carb is identical, so I'm going to get it out before it dissapears into rust heaven!
After that there's some small welding to be done on the floor, since its almost perfect, and then the body panels i.e. bonnet, wings, front door skins and bootlid have to be replaced. I'm not in a rush, since it will be 30 yrs old in 2 yrs, and hopefully avoid the NCT test! That said it might be as well to get it NCT'd since I plan to take it up to Dublin for the odd week's run. Optomistic eh? :)
