DRM IN CPUs, Intel going down...

    Found this on guru3d.com forums:
I stumbled upon this by accident at a Flight Sim site. Apparently, Intel will be adding embedded DRM (Digital Rights Management) chips into it's Pentium D processors and onto it's 945 chipset. In other words, in the future, if you own a piece of software and want to install it on a new system, you will have to purchase a new licence. Looks like this whole copyright mess has turned into ripping off the public. Of course, we could all see that coming but it's still quite infuriating. Punish the lot because there are a few bad people. Although they make good CPUs, I'd say this is a good reason not to buy Intel. Still, it's important to note that Microsoft pressured them into doing it.

No word on AMD. It's too clouded to say if they will do the same. They aren't US based of they're out of reach of Microsoft and the other bad boy for now.

    Full story here.

This is a bad road to be going down i think. Surely there must be something illegal about a monoply software company sticking proprietry DRM on a (more or less) monopoly CPU. Either way i'm not liking it at all.

As with all other things in life....if it costs market share, it will be removed :)

    Not loving the idea myself.

AMD are US based (quote says otherwise).

The whole point about making it hardware is that it can operate independant of the OS. I don't think switching to linux will make a difference, but providing AMD don't sell out and do the same thing, i know what i'll be upgrading to in future. and its definately NOT intel.

Well, nearly everything on Linux is free and GPL, so you won't need a Licence

I'm not so sure - if Microsoft are willing to pay them to implement it, no doubt intel will already be working on some way to recoup any losses from the market from MS's pockets??

    Maybe not though - I don't know :)

Oh - and for some reason I though AMD was scandinavian

Lost market share tends to lead to further lost market share....I mean, if intel suddenly only had 70% of the market, and AMD were in Dell machines......then people get to know AMD (most non-geek people have never even heard of AMD).....it can be a vicious circle.

If it were my company, you couldn't pay me to lose market share. Also, I don't see what MS has to gain by having their DRM system in intel chips. Maybe I'm missing something.

AMD is HQ'd in the US, but they manufacture a lot (if not most) of their parts in europe (Dresden I think).

Just like the CPU ID that Intel put into the P2 :D

If there is enough money thrown at this DRM idea, media files like avi's and mp3's could be included. Very little of intel sales would be affected by this move though, Dell would have that sorted out before the PC is sold.

    1. AMD and IBM are included in the "Trusted (Treacherous) Computing Group",
so looks like you'll be buying VIA, or that chinese cpu. According to above linkie, they decided to do an "all together now" approach after the P3 CPUID screaming.

    2. IBM and HP are working on "Trusted Linux", to pawn off on companies.

    3. You're aware that they've been selling recordable DVD (Ritec), DVD recorder/players (Pioneer) and DVD software (Power DVD) with CPRM for months now. Already people are seeing key exchange error messages when trying to use their burned DVDs with the "wrong" software (i.e. without CPRM).

    4. Nastiest bit is docs created using blacklisted SW won't be readable on other computers. So you'll have to be careful on which Uni machines you edit your thesis, and keep lots of backups.
