    Hi

I wonder if anyone can answer a question regarding USB 2.0 or 1.1

I have to get a usb hub and a USB pen drive for a friends computer , a Win 98. I don't know if it is Win98 or Win98 /SE I think is a Dell PC a few years old might be 4 or 5 but could be older, I think the motherboard is ATX so the USB ports are part of the motherboard.

I think she might have a USB 2 because she has an USB printer/Fax install at this time.

When I look at the USB Hub they are 2.0 and/or 1.1 what I wonder is what will happen if I buy a 2.0 but her PC's USB is only 1.1? and the other way around, will the equipment get damage?

I think the USB key will work whatever the version of USB is.

    Any ideas will be welcome.

    Thanks

USB 2 is backwards compatable. USB 2 devices will run on USB 1 or 1.1 ports at a slower speed, and USB 1 or 1.1 devices will run on USB 2 ports at slower speeds.

Remember, you will need to install software for the key drive if it is on Win 98

    If it's Win98, then it's only running at USB1.1 anyway :)

    Oh yeah, forgot that.

It'll still work though, go ahead.

Not forgetting that Dell's a lot less then 4 or 5 years old may still only have USB 1.1 too.

Also double check the drivers as many devices only have drivers for 98 SE second edition and not the earlier releases.

the USb hub probably won't carry enough power to power the Pen drive , be prepared to plug this into a main USB port on the PC

I'd be rather surprised (read as "amazed and quite disappointed") if this was the case in any particular situation - I've never bothered plugging in any usb hub and I've never encountered this particular problem

Ive come across this last week, the usb hub (1.1 on my daughters 98se machine) wont power my key but the main ports will, but it didnt matter, didnt have any pen drivers for 98 anyway. anyone know the best place to get these.

Some devices won't work through a hub, probably more critical for 98 which uses manufacuters drivers than for for 2000.

Did you have anything else in the HUB ?
IIRC the current is up to 1/2 an amp or similar so if it was all going into the key it would get quite hot.

No only plugged in the hub so I wouldnt have to reach around the back every time i used the key. key was the only thing in it!.
