What kind of pick do all of you use regularly? Myself, I use 1mm Dunlop Ultex picks, and also the Ibanez Vai 1mms. For acoustic I prefer .70 picks. What are your preferences?

Also, can anyone tell me the advantages of using metal picks? I have a few but I can't really see the point in using them...

Just whatever 1mm picks I've got lying around. Either Fender, or Dunlop. No real preference, they do their job. Also got a few Tortex Sharpies, and some 1.5mm that are quite mad. ;)

    Dunlop Jazz III, black.

The best picks i've come across are the D'Andrea Black Jetex pics with the ribbed thumb. They're .88 but feel harder than other 88s, so that it feels like a cross between 88 and 1mm.
Problem is, i can't find them anywhere anymore. If anyone spots them, please get me as many as you can and i'll pay you double :) .

So in the meantime i'm using green Tortex. Quite good actually.

I like my Green Tortex, but I rarely used to use picks cos i was primarily a bassist.
But now that ive started the ole git box, ill shop around a bit and see what i like.

2mm Dunlop Stubby or Jazz III. Sometimes use slightly thinner picks, but mostly for acoustic stuff, and even then I usually use a stubby. :) The edges start to fray on them though quite quickly if you play hard.

    Red Jazz III's

i know a guy who puts his plecs in talcum powder before a gig...this guy sweats like a rapist i mean its like butter drippin off him

I don't sweat, play it cool man. Black ones are too scratchy anyway, don't like the way they make contact with the strings.

I use green Dunlop tortex picks chopped in half so that I play loads of dodgy accidental pinch harmonics and people think I'm deadly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,117 ✭✭✭Eoin Madsen

Eoin Madsen uses Jim Dunlop USA Nylon .46mm picks.

Dunlop .73s would be my favourite, I don't really like anything above, I like a bit of flex. For acoustic the flexier the better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

Those grey Dunlop ones (0.77?) and anything thick and strong if I want to use a plec on the bass. Oh yeah, I have fingers and E-Bow too :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

Those nasty grey dunlop picks are the only ones i really dont like, they just dont feel right. Too soft?
I'll swap the whole lot for some fingers if you're interested. Or the e-bow. ;)

    Same here, they're the best!

Do you not find that the Dunlops bend, wear down and generally slow you down?

I find lighter picks generally take away any conviction in guitar playing, especially acoustic guitar.

I use the Dunlop ones that clip onto your thumb - brialliant for slide guitar and various picking

Lighter picks do bend, but me thinks 73mm on a acoustic is perfect. Harder picks would wreck the strings!

    .60 or .73

Anything above just comes out of my hand

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,998 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

Nah, they wouldn't wreck the strings. I use elixers and play with Jazz III's. You really can get more dynamics with a good hard plec. I'm not one to be playing slow strummed G chord songs about fairies though ;)

    Wow Giblet you're cool

i play bass mostly, so i prefer harder plecs generally. for acoustic red jazz IIIs are my favourites too - really nice tone, especially for picking. they're too small to use on bass strings tho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,998 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

    Yep, that's true Pistol Pete.

It bends but it doesn't put me off. In fact the one plec I've been using for the last few months has now warped to fit the shape of my fingers. It's cool (like Giblet)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 116 ✭✭cormhag

if you want to strum at all in a song thick plecs are useless. a .73 is the best of both worlds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

if i was told right pick a plec and i didn't know what tune i was gonna play with it about a .7 would be my choice for all roundness..not too hard or too soft

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

I can strum with heavy picks. It's not difficult to be honest, you just have to play looser.

You can strum with whatever you want, it's just a matter of comfort

I find the exact opposite. Also, with a lighter plec you get more tone and less harsh attack.

i'm wit eoin on this one lighter picks only ever disappont me when i'm doin pinch harmonics....they give a great light rhythm feelin to a song

Dunlop gatorgrips are great if you have problems with slippy pics, cos they've a sandy, textured finish...

Ive been using ibanez steve vai pics lately....for no other reason than steve uses them.... :D:D:D

This has truly been illuminating. I have a box full of plecs, some of them are even broken.

Depending on what I'm doing, my first choice is a Dunlop .46mm. I used to go with the .38s but when I went up a string gauge they started to sound a bit papery. My absolute favourites though are the light or thin Gibson USAs. They tend to be a bit on the fragile side so the majority of the broken plecs which I still haven't bothered to throw out are Gibsons.

I've just discovered I have 150 plectrums, and the most common are PickBoys, ProGrips and various Dunlops, plus quite a few Gibsons.

    scary
