I find this to be true. For example, I spent yesterday afternoon in Stephens Green with some friends, three guys and two girls, and the ladies were very quiet most of the time while us lads ranted on about whatever came to mind!

However I believe this is also true, because after a couple of hours everybody bar one girl left and myself and her spent the next 5 hours talking! which was great, really interesting conversations, but she certainly talked more than I did, and not because I had nothing to say, simply because woman have a strange ability to just keep talking, tieing (sp?) everything in together with stories for everything etc. etc.

In short, I believe both to be true.

Or a numerate person with a tape recorder and a stop watch. (Zimmerman & West 1975, West & Fenstermaker 1993, Coates 1993, Cingular Wireless 2004).

Surveys have also found that most men and many women listening to the recordings perceived the women recorded as talking for longer than the men, until they'd actually measured the length of time each talked for and how many words they'd said.

It doesn't really matter how more woman talk more than men.

So long as men continue to listen at 0%, we'll be fine.

I put their gossiping down to the variety of "womens magazines" which quite a few read.

I recently picked one of these up in the office, my dear god....they are warping their minds in so many respects.

To read these magazines and take anything to heart would be like taking a politicians reply to a question seriously, yes the project will be complete by xxxx......

I've already cited papers. Man-Made Language examines some of this research in a more readable form, but goes into several other matters as well.

Short answer is that the less you listen to what someone is being said the more it seems like they talk a lot.
Longer answer a few different explanations, with pretty much the entirety of Feminist-linguistic theory being covered, which isn't a field I know enough about to go into that much.

Who Talks More, Men or Women?
A common cultural stereotype describes women as being talkative, always speaking and expressing their feelings. Well, this is probably true, however, do women do it more than men? No! In fact an experiment designed to measure the amount of speech produced suggested that men are more prone to use up more talking time than women. An experiment b y Marjorie Swacker entailed using three pictures by a fifteenth century Flemish artist, Albrecht Durer which were presented to men and women separately. They were told to take as much time as they wanted to describe the pictures. The average time for males: 13.0 minutes, and the average time for women 3.17 minutes.

    Why is this?
Sociolinguists try to make the connection between our society and our language in a way that suggests that women talk less because it has not always been as culturally acceptable as it has been for men. Men have tended to take on a more dominant role not only in the household, but in the business world. This ever-changing concept is becoming le ss applicable in our society, however, the trend is still prominent in some societies across the world. It is more acceptable for a man to be talkative, carry on long conversation, or a give a long wordy speech, however it is less acceptable for a women to do so. It has been more of a historical trend for men have more rights to talk. However , it is common for men to be more silent in situations that require them to express emotion. Since childhood, they have been told to "keep their cool" and "remain calm, be a man."

female friends talk more than male tbh....but it depends, some guys talk more.
female friends are always the ones to start conversations like 'what has changed about me since we've met' and then 'reall how so'
=then i have to tread real carefully and never say you used to flirt with everything including the kettle to some1 in a mood :)
guys are more like that was a good show no more conversation :P

Any 'experiment' with such an enormous difference has to have been carried out on no more than 3 people of each gender.

In my experience women talk far more than men. A girl rings me they tell me what they want to say, I grunt or make some sort of noise and they keep talking. If I'm in a group the women are more likely to ramble on about nothing.

I think it depends more on your personality than your gender.
I know some extremely chatty girls but also some very quiet ones and vice versa :)

I've seen this idea mentioned in lots of books on sociolinguistics and more thorough investigations have led to similar conclusions. But this is a thread on AH not Humanities so interested people can go google it themselves!

Is that really an objective test, all it indicates is how much people can talk about fifteenth century Flemish art. Now change the subject to tampons -v- pads ....

Part of the point was that none of the people involved knew anything about fifteenth century Flemish art.

lets forget the 15th centruy art i gather the reason the guy waffled on is because the person listening to him was a hot chick and he wanted to impress her. Basically guys are show offs so those tests are tainted!

What we want to look at is people talking to people girls talk to each other alot more whereas guys dont talk that much. How many guys do you know would ring up there mates for a chat? Answer: NONE

Also look at these women who sit down drinking tea talking rubbish all day or auld ones who just sit there talking all day. Guys dont do that. Women talk more by far.

Exactly - they talk more to show off!

You counting all the wasted hours spent trying to chat up women on the men's side?
