How Do U Decide The Winner?

simple really, I pick out the one that I like the most and give the prize to whoever submitted it.

I have come up with a shortlist of the ones that I wil be picking the winner from.

here is the shortlist by entry number

    5, 6, 10, 16, 20, 24, 31

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

Well I said I would announce the winner before the 1st of June so here it is.

Before I do I would like to thank everyone who submitted pictures. You have made the forum a more colourful place with some wonderful pictures.

Unfortunately I have only one prize and only one person can win.

    First the runners-up

Second Runner-up was entry Number 6 by limerick_man. A nice colourful picture of cruises street with all the different people who are living in our city, and a fine display of how parts of our city are a thriving commercial area.

First Runner-up was entry number 20 by shepthedog. I can tell you now that there are many people from limerick who have fond memories of fishing around where the university now stands. It is a fine tradition for limerick people to enjoy themselves in those parts. Larry de Claire's song "Rocks of the Old Curragower" even mentions how fishing on the river was a favoured passtime of Limerick youth. And if you cross the new bridge late at night you are sure to find people fishing.

    and now for the winner

The winner of the first ever (yes I said first, because I plan on holding other competitions on this forum) competition, The Picture Limerick Competition is.....

Entry Number 5 by Jonski, of St. John's Cathedral. The spire of St. John's is the first thing most people will see when entering the city. Limerick is also known as the city of the churches, and with the mountains in the background, one is awed by the sheer enormity of this cathedral. The picture is also full of colour. I like vibrant colours in pictures, and this is why I picked this one.

Once again. I thank everyone who took part in this competition, and hope that you will participate in future competitions run by the forum. I know that I took great pleasure in seeing different pictures of our city, I hope everyone else did too.

    Well , what can I say , I am absolutely delighted .

I see photographs in my mind alot but more often than not , can't capture them , it's too dark , too bright , not square , this that the other , and I know thousands that could out shoot me with a disposable . I had a clear advantage here as I had the time to go out and try and shoot some scenes that I had seen in the past . The others didn't come out as I saw them ( not as much depth as with the naked eye ) , but I thought this one , while not being spectacular , did .

Also I never set out to win this , just to maybe put up some photos of Limerick that might spark some memories of someone in some far off place that stumbled accross the forums . I think it's a great idea , that should be continued and the "competition" just spured ( spelling?) people on to post . Congratulations to all that entered and I think that maybe my one just appealed to Billy's idea of Limerick at the time .

Once again , I am absolutely delighted ( my first win , in anything , in 38 years ) ( will I be on Kenny Live on Friday night ? ..........where's my suit ? )

    John .

tee hee hee , like a little child over here .

Congradulations jonski, TBH when i went out taking these pics I felt confident I had won (the comp took off slowly), when i uploaded them you had your other two... and i was still confident, but then you uploaded this one and i knew it would be up to judgement (I still prefered mine, I love the idea beauty in cities... rather than hills and churches etc.) (your right though it really is a judgment thing)

Actually off topic but if i was choosing a pic i would have probably picked #31 by moshpit ... i really feel this captures modern limerick, what we want it to be! But its important to keep down to earth and remember where we came from, congrads!

Congrats jonski, lovely photo and well taken.. Its cool to see all the different views of limerick.. Great idea billy, hope to see more soon..

Good to get an overall view of the city and county instead of what ppl usually associate limerick with, i.e. pikeys etc
Well done to everyone who took part..

Yes I do intend running another competition in a few months similar to this one. although next time I will try seek out a sponsor so that the prize will be more substantial.

When you get the time jonski will you pm your postal details and your choice of prize so that you can have them posted to you.

I may run another one in April/May again.

I also noticed last night that someone by the name of "tuborg" posted some of mine and someone elses pictures on archiseek and did not credit us or say where he got the pictures.

    that was very bold.

insidentily all the pictures do not seem to be showing up on this thread, so if you go to http://www.boards.ie/photopost and find my album you will find them all.

those are pretty good, unfortunately the competition ended six months ago. and the prerequisate (sp) for entries had to be that the poster had to have taken them themselves.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,208 ✭✭✭gaf1983

is there gonna be another one soon?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

D-A-V-E, they are great photo's, actually better than most I've ever seen on postcards of the city. Fantastic to see the city looking so well. It'd be great if you could get a postcard company to print up a few thousand and see if they sell.
