Quite simply a shell is an interface between the user, on a keyboard or whatever to the system kernel. Obviously there is some interlinking between the two, and some security associations but its where the user access the system directly and interacts through i mixture of commands and other executables that interact with the hardware/other software. A shell is this communication process presented through text. Like two way language translation, it translates what the system outputs into human readable format, and translates what you input to system readable format. Different shells do this differently.
