Download one of the online poker clients, there's loads, have a read of the forums to see which are the most popular.
Play the play money tables for a while, lodge some cash and play the tiny limits for a while. See how it goes.

If you can, get along to the Fitz/Merrion card clubs in Dublin or a decent tournament around Ireland.

At that stage you should be ready to admit you have an addiction :)

i understand the general rules (generally ;) ) - a basic grounding would be good and then some low cost games just to get some experience until i get to the Rounders level :)

Check out the Beginners' Guide on The Hendon Mobs website Here

Than when you are ready start to play online for play money but remember a play money game is not played the same as a normal cash game as there is nothing riding on it.

Then move on to free to enter tournament's which are called "freerolls" all the major online sites have them.

Jumping into online poker is just going to lose you money. Get a home game going...and at least lose to your mates. :)
