The flashing orange light of death

I'm not exactly a broadband expert so please excuse my ignorant terminlology.

Firstly, I have Eircom broadband (non-wireless). There are a number of lights on what I think is my modem. Written under the lights are such things as: PWR, SYS, USB, 10/100M, DSL and ACT.

Every so often the orange light (the ACT one) starts flashing. I know this is not a good thing since it is usually a precursor to the connection dropping. Why does this happen? Is there anything I can do to stop it?

    Thankye

ACT should flash each and every time there is a packet transmission afik.
Acknowledge is what ACT stands for....

Thought it stood for activity, showing whenever the modem was sending / receiving data (ie. being active)

If your connection keeps dropping, then it is more likely a line problem eg. no microfilters, dodgy extensions, bad cables etc.
