    Im lookin for new amp advice guys...

    My current rig is

    Gibson SG Special with SD custom custom in the bridge and a SD '59 in the neck. Clickity... and clickity
    Ibanez RG370DX with SD custom in the bridge

    Pedalboard

    Amp = sh1t. MG100dfx

    I play rock/metal/prog etc. Muse and Dreamtheater type tones is what I'm after. I need great amp distortion and good cleans. I want to go tube. Im thinking ENGL thunder reverb for 729 here which is over 100 cheaper than thomann. I only really need a 1x12 combo at the moment because I dont gig.

    Budget = €700ish

    i reckon you've answered you own question, ENGL is the way to go. Either that or look at some line 6 stuff. But engl gets my vote.

    No Im definately gonna go valve. Valve would be easier to resell for better price than modelling and stuff. Im nearly sure I'll go ENGL, but I'm not sure if the thunder is a high gain amp... ENGL make low gain stuff too. I could buy a fender hotrod deluxe and get a mesa V-twin preamp pedal. But i cant try any of this gear in Ireland which sucks. Well i could try the fender but i think it'll be the ENGL that i'll buy

    Go with the ENGL, even there lighter gained stuff is excellent. I wouldn't really call them lighter gain. They still crank out a lovely distortion. You could always use a Tube screamer or DS-1 to boost the front end to give you more balls. The V-Twin peddle isn't worth it. I had one and sold it on.

    I say go for the ENGL.
    They rock.

    Yeah i should have the money for the ENGL in three weeks if save all of my wages.

    Thomann has a non reverb model with independant volume controls for each channel. €759 + 24 shipping

    Musicstore has a reverb model with no crunch volume for €729 + a lot of shipping.

    Which should i get? I dont use much reverb.

    They don't come supplied with a footswitch afaik. Think you have to buy it seperately, which is another €70ish.

    I have a double marshall footswitch somewhere that i could use. It's TRS latching switches... I hope it works

    What about a Peavey Classic 30 or 50?

    I like my gain, and price really isnt an issue. Id prefer to spend €800 on a decent amp that i like than €500 on a classic 30 that i would have to use a booster or distortion pedal to get my dirty sounds. The classic 30 is a decent amp and all but from what i heard the ENGL is more high gain orientated.

    I'd better make the obligatory nice carpet comment:

    Nice carpet, nearly a contender with the Doc's for most rock carpet on boards.

    My floorboards are fairly rocking aswell.

    Even though some people didn't think so.

    Floorboards are more jazz than rock. Lino is for power noise.

    Bull****, carpet muffles yer sound. Floorboards are perfect for the rumble of ROCK!

    Hmmm, you're points intrigue me. What about concrete?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    Concrete sucks. Can't play on it in your bare feet. Too cold. And it makes your tone very grey sounding.

    NO NO NO!

    Think about it man, what is your guitar made of? What's the chassis of the amp made from? Wood = Tone, therefor wooden floor = one room full of tone! Show me a concrete guitar.

    It's ALL about the wood, baby!

    Playing on concrete alters your tone? For fook sake. What a load of bull.

    Nah dont mind us, we're just lazy-ass guitarists that spend 90% of the time talking about the gear we want and not actually playing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

    That's about 90% true, I play my guitar while I'm on the computer. :)
