Using dell tag to lookup specification

    Hi,

If I have the dell tag number for a machine is there any way I can look up the spec it originally shipped with? I think somebody mentioned something to this effect here recently.

I can go into the Dell site under the support section, plug in the tag but when I click on configuration it tries to read the configuration of the machine I am on now which isn't what I am looking for.

    Paschal.

when you have a tag, you can just ring dell, and ask them

http://support.dell.com click on product support on the right-hand side.

Nope it does not work for any of the tags I have either.

I have 30 plus tags that I want to get detailed information on. A nice and simple URL where I could get a machine readable response would be much easier than sitting on a call all morning with a Dell rep transcribing the results.

Thanks anyway, but it does not look like there is an easy way to do this.

Thats odd as it works with every dell i have here ..and i've european, uk, irish and american models .. site is handy from an admin point of view as it allows you to save them all (once you've registered), and a central point for drivers & downloads and the odd flashbios updates .. unfortunaly the european site doesn't save details, but it'll do the same job per machine.

OK just to be clear I'm not talking about the ActiveX tool that runs on your machine and reads the current configuration as that works just fine on the machine I have now. I'm looking to pull the original spec for a machine that I'm not currently on.

Sample tag would be JM9K91J - ship date 10/10/2004

    Latitude D600

    PM,DOT,1600,NB,UFCPGA
    Service Tag: JM9K91J
    Service Code: 42705181639
    Ship Date: 10/10/2004

Look like the details you need?

Use this link to enter the system tag...

Simply click on "original system config" not "current system config".
