Going to be in Paris for three months over the summer. Roaming seems to be a bit of a rip off (99 c per minute dialling and receiving calls with 02). So Im debating signing onto a phone company over there.

Does anyone have any experience of this- easy enough to do?

Also would I have to change SIM card?

I have friends who are in college in london. they thought the roaming charges were a bit pricey (as i found out when i went over). they signed up to a company over there and got new sim cards. I assume its the same no matter where u go.

Never roam if you can help it, complete rip-off. And you pay for people calling you also. Buy a pay as you go sim in Paris.

Just buy a pay as you go SIM in Paris. Probably the same as how it works here - buy the SIM, free credit. Then ya can just dump the SIM when you move back here.

If you're going for three months, you may as well get a SIM, no point having to fork out bucketloads of money for roaming, it's a total rip off!

Cheers for the replies guys

I probably will have to get a new SIM and might sell it on then when I leave.

The only thing is - do phone companies in general require you to have a permanent address? ( Im staying in a hostel for 10 days before I move into my flat)

Another thing that someone might know about France in general.
I'm going to be looking for a job and will therefore have to look to opening a bank account. I expect that the banks are going to be pretty difficult to deal with. Any experience in doing this?

Just make sure your phone is unlocked before you go buying a new sim. You can get that done pretty easily over here before you go.

Banks are ok to deal with. Once you move into your flat, you should get a Certificate de Résidence, which the bank will look for to prove that you're resident in France. They may also look for a job contract or something similar. G'luck.

if its a 'pay as you go' sim youget you shouldnt need any proof of address.

If i were you I would buy an Orange sim, think they are aroun thirty euro. If you buy 100euro worth of credit you get 50 euro free. One major problem is that the credit exoires really quickly, not with larger amounts but with small amounts like 10e's.

Do not go near SFR cost me a small fortune to text home. I didn't have a permenant address when I bought mine.

Banks in France are all quiet bad. I would recommend Societe Generale.
