Hey, I'm looking to start back playing rugby this September...have hit the gym already! Anyone know of any clubs looking for players? (Nothing too serious to begin with)

well there are a heap of them in ballbridge. Lansdowne, Wanderers, Old Belvedere, Bective, Old Weseley, Monkstown. All of them have junior teams.

Alot of my mates play for Bective junior teams and it's suppossed to be quite relaxed

They sure are, never seem stressed about getting thrashed by Clontarf every time. Great lads!

    :)

Monkstown are a Junior Club now, they did not get out Junior Division 1 the last two years, so I think they have officially lost their Senior status.

Know a couple of lads who play Junior in Bective as well, and it appears to be pretty relaxed and easy going.

Having played junior rugby in both Senior & Junior clubs, I have found the atmosphere much more relaxed in Junior clubs - played for one particular senior club, and there was a real elitist attitute (undeserved at that) with the senior team(@Kenmc - you can back me up on this one!). But that could well have been the club itself.

tbh, i've found that the top teams have been laughably elitist in most clubs (hockey and rugby) i've been a member.

My rugby club was almost destroyed by faction fighting that developed over the payment of senior players. Why should i pay subs so that some mercenary with absolutely no loyalty to my club can be paid....and then **** off after being a useless pile of ****

In my hockey club, some of the firsts expect to have their subs paid for them and to get free gear, while others enquired about match fees....this is irish hockey Leinster div 2.

Hear hear! Exactly the mentality I was thinking of in my previous club. The funny thing is although my current club is a Junior club and therefore has a much more relaxed & social atmosphere, I am playing at a better level and have won more silverware than I ever did playing for the Senior club!

    pray tell....who you playing for?

I'm thinking oif playing again. not suppossed to due to too many blows to the head (hence playing hockey) but might be fun to play at a low level (J3 and below)

I currently play for Seapoint (based in Ballybrack, not Seapoint). Didn't play much this year, and of course they go and win the metro cup when I'm not there  ...

TBH I don't think you are much less prone to injuries no matter how junior a level you play at, the guys you are up against may not be as gung ho but it is just as easy to pick up a bang on the head at Junior level. Just something to keep in mind :)

ah....of all the clubs....I played underage for Greystones and we used to have the nastiest matches with Seapoint....don't think i could ever play for them :D

Ah, you're right about the injuries tho...tbh most of the injuries i've received were in schools rugby....had very bad eyesight and used to ruck head first...admitedly i did get knocked out in my last adult game and thought....that's enough

Ah, 'Stones - definitely a local derby :) . I'm actually due to move out to Greystones (pratically right behind the grounds), but just can't see myself switching to them - although commuting etc may mean I have to.

Do you wear a scrum cap? I have taken to wearing one basically because of the sheer size of some of the guys I played against (Leinster League means a lot of BIG country guys) and the 10 man nature of the game at that level.

nope...i get quite claustrophobic and i can't stand wearing them.....actually don't agree with wearing any padding at all...and i wonder why i get hurt so often:rolleyes:

It took me a bit of getting used to alright, but prefer it now. Scrum cap and gum shield is the only padding / protection I agree with unless there is a specific reason for it (i.e. don't like shoulder pads just for the sake of wearing them)

I think I may know the one you're talking about Eoin ;) Yeah, I'm hoping to get them to pay for my shoulder surgery (I was playing for them at the time I injured it) and then f*ck off somewhere else. Was thinking about Stillorgan possibly. Played for a junior club (Ballincollig) when I lived in Cork and they were much sounder than any of my current club to be honest. PM if you wanna know which club I mean, so you can avoid.

Eoin mate you're going soft in your old age! Scrum caps! Pfft! :)
Shoulder pads I wear, told to by the Physio cos I've injured them a bit, and as a front rower the shoulders take a hell of a lot of abuse. And even with them on I go and dislocate my bloody AC joint! GRRRRR. And gumshield obviously. Also wear shinguards cos I'm a hooker.

used to play loose head but now both my shoulders pop no matter what....have had to wander to the back row now....much easier.

Oh please Kenny! I wear a scrum cap and you sound like Robocop with all the crap you are wearing now :D

Ruggie, I play loosehead as well, but did it in reverse to you (i.e. got too fat for backrow, so got moved to frontrow :o ) - did my shoulder, but from landing awkwardly while scoring the cup final winning score from the halfway all on my own. Or from tripping over a ruck. Actually, pretty sure it was the latter.

Anyway - we have hijacked this thread to bits at this stage!

Agreed about the elitism. It's one of the reasons I play for the 5th team (the "3rd Bs") - there's even elitism in the 3rd As, funny as that might seem. Extremely cliquey. Such is life.

That's a lot of teams for a club to have, even for a senior club - is it a Dublin team? Would only think that Lansdowne or Belvo could field that many...

I'll take pity on my lessors :)

Yep, it is a lot, but I'm happy enough, and it takes me 3 minute to get to training on my bike...

Man this really gets me wanting to go back to rugby. Might take it up again after Im back from America. So much more fun than the gym.

yeah for sure. hard to push yourself without any purpose. there's no way I'd ever manage to drive myself so hard as some of the training sessions for rugby - can't even walk to the changing rooms for 10 mins after some of the good ones!

Ken, that qualifies as a bad session then, you loony!

Probably a lot more down to earth, but still an AIL club so there could still be that Jock mentality - look for Junior clubs in your locality, as said before usually a lot more relaxed environment but not necessarily at the expense of good rugby. (actually a couple of lads from belvo down in Seapoint )

Edit Just to say that the above is not based on knowing the atmosphere in DLSP - just making a generalisation of AIL clubs.

Trojan will obviously be able to answer better, but Clontarf is one of the few clubs who can put out solid teams all the way through the junior leagues. I know I have never had an easy game against them at any level.

Eh? A bad session is where 5 people turn up and we play bloody tip rugby for 20 mins. A good session you get a hell of a workout, plenty of physical loads of mauling and rucking up and down the pitch.
Least I reckon so anyway. Else how are you gonna beat clontarf??? :)

    Let's see...

J4 got to league 1/4s thanks to great form early on, but had a bad end of season losing semi and cup 1st round. table (beat Parkmore in league playoff).

J3s won the Moran Cup, got to league final table

    J2s - don't know.

J1s won their league I believe.

Seniors got to AIL semi http://www.leinsterrugby.ie/leagueTables.jsp?tournament=2&division=5&season=

Not a great season, but not bad all the same.
