just trying to help a mate with a format of a secondary drive in windows xp home.

now as i was aware once you had your primary drive with xp installed on it you could format a secondary drive within xp.

but with the attached image of his "disk management" dialog box the disk is said to be unallocated.

anyone know what he should do?

Format it and allocate it, make sure he formats it in the same way NTFS FAT as whatever his primary is.

It should do (does on mine) get partition magic and it will do it outside of windows.

If he goes into My Compture and right clicks on it , it should give him the option.

On XP pro you have the option to import the disk but
This is a - feature of XP home that doesn't get much air play.

I would suggest you right click on the unallocated space and create a primary partition and then format it....

you can't do that, i've after trying and he's after trying it too.

you can only do that if it comes up in the top half of that window

That's not right. They only show up in the top half when they have a drive letter associated with them. As it stands, the drive is not initialized meaning it's not formated. Before you can format it you must create a partition. So before it will show up in the top half you must do these steps...
