I have a G4 mac and when I went to power it on yesterday the hard drive started making a funny noise and it wouldnt boot up. The noise it is making is a clicking and whirring noise. Is the drive dead? Is it possible to retrieve data from a hard drive that is broken like this or is there a good chance that all my files are gone?

Sounds like the electromagnet controlling one of the read arms is dead, you probably can't get anything recovered unless you send it to a specialist.

You might be able to get the files but you would need to hook the hd up to another computer and copy them into a working hd.

Sometimes slaping the hd off a table will get it working for a few mines just enough time to get the important files off the hd. Or put it in a fridge for sometime and then start it up.

do NOT slap it off anything. And if you decide to put it in a fridge, wrap it well in plastic so that nothing gets wet and leave it at least overnight if not longer.

Thanks people. I ran a hardware test and got the following....

    ERROR CODE 2STF/1/4

... so after googling this it seems as if its a lost cause, I'll throw it into the fridge anyway and see what happens!

I would slap it as it DOES work! But i gave the fridge option also if he did not want to slap it.
