it sounds like your motherboard has found a failure in its post (power on self test). if you check you motherboards manual and look up post falure codes, it should be there. if not, download the manual for the Asus site. the manual they have on the net usually has a lot more detail and is easyer to understand. also, go into your bios and cheack a few things. is your gfx card running at its rated speed eg AGP*8, is your ram correcty rated. some times your motherboard will under rate something to get your system to boot. But most of the time its usually Ram. if you have two sticks, take out one and see if the beeps go away, if not repeat with the other.

Hmmm, thanks for the suggestions. Pity they were the obvious. The Beep code is not listed anywhere, hence I asked here. The RAM is fine, the graphics card is fine....

I went to the asus site, and looked up your board.
If you look at the manual, section 3-1 Powering up for the first time.
    Ami Bios Beep Codes.

Afaik the P4C800 it will beep on boot for every usb device connected. The first beep you hear is the POST telling you all is ok.
The second too could be usb related?

I take it the machine boots fine otherwise?

Otherwise I'd point the finger at a memory issue as AMI, Award and Phoniox were roughly the same with post memory beep codes. (parity error)

    Hope this sheds some light.

best thing if you have access to another compter is swap bits from the other one into yours until it stops making the noise. its solved no end of hardware problems for me

Well it boots fine... But it's kind of acting oddly recently.
