Anyone know what this refers to???
Every so often the PC freezes up when shutting down.. When I try to restart I get the black screen asking how to start windows...on selecting safe mode I see if freezes on the following
"multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(0)/windows/system32/drivers/mup.sys"the system starts up only after running norton disc check (from cd, ), which shows no probs & automatically reboots when finished..
I have had to do this 3 times in the last 10 days..any ideas would be wellcome..thanks

looks to be a BIOS problem. Seems to be somewhat of a mystery.Check this out. Maybe reinstalling windows?

{EDIT} Here is someone who solved it. You have a USB card?

I've had this but can't remeber how I solved it. It was something to do with the bios so it would be no harm to clear it. Mine froze on the Mup.sys for about 5 minutes but the booted on into windows if I left the system sit there..

Hmm not what I wanted to hear but thanks anyway... Prob seem slightly different to what was being discussed there. Thier machines try to restart, mine just freezes & can be started after running disk doctor like i said...Anyway I'll try afew restore points first & then Norton Ghost before going for the XP disk.. Thanks for your help..

Apparently its a known problem for Service Pack 2 in Windows XP. Heres a few options i googled for u

1) Boot off the XP CD and enter the "recovery console"
2) type "diasable mup" and hit enter (with out quotation marks)
3)reboot normaly and should work.

Others suggested restoring the mup.sys file because it maybe corrupt, you can do this through the recovery console.

Another one was to reset your BIOS to the default settings. Reading these its seems like it could be a motherboard issue, but not your fault or anything. Its something invalid in Service Pack 2, suprise suprise.. Try this other solution.

Boot from XP CD
Let all load until 'Welcome to Setup'
DO NOT SELECT REPAIR
Select 'ENTER'
Then select F8
On next screen when windows has found old windows select 'Let Windows try and repair'
Press 'R'

I think this will restore any changes made but will keep your settings, correct?

I am going to try that now..I have just noticed another problem & was wondering could it be related.... My PC & laptop are networked via belkin pre-n router, both are showing connected 100mps. explorer on Laptop can see pc files but explorer on PC sees laptop but will not open any further to explore files etc.. I can ping both machines both ways.. Desktop is running XP pro (SP2)Laptop is running XP home (SP2)
