"Computer Shopper" July 2005 edition gives a decent review of of the top 10, if money is not a problem Plextor PX-716A seem to be the chioce, i can verify that they are an excellent make (very Fast), others that do well are

    LG GSA-4163b
    Sony Dru-720A
    ASUS Drw-1608p
    NEC ND3520A

We use the pioneers in work... Well, they're never used. There's a tower of them sitting in a room for the past few months.

I have the NEC 3500 for the PC. I recommend using a PC based ones, because when it comes to backing up those DVDs, you'll need dual layer media, proving expensive. The computer won't have much difficulty in compressing/removing extra features to fit it all on a cheap single layer disc.
