Do I need to change my driver?

I've just recently taken up golf again. Last time I hit a ball was in about 1997. First thing I'm thinking of is replacing my driver which is one of the original Great Big Berthas. I have mixed feelings about this club, on the one hand it's very forgiving of mis hits. OTOH it's very, very light. I often end up swinging way too fast with it and find it hard to get a nice rhythm going as it almost feels like there is no head on the club :)

I think I'd prefer a slightly heavier, more "solid" feeling driver with a slightly smaller head. The question is, would I lose or gain distance with one of these compared to GBB. I hit GBB around 250-260 metres on an average "good" drive and 270+ metres on my best drives. TBH these figures are almost the same as an old wooden 3 wood that I have *and* I'm straighter with the 3 wood. So I don't think I'm getting the full benefit out of GBB or else the club doesn't particularly suit me. Anyone got an opinion or recommendation for a new driver?

brian the callaway 454 is 209 in all the shops at the moment, it has a massive
head, will be much more forgiving than your current one. Or try the G2 for 100
more. based on your distances get the NV shaft in stiff..

the old GBB is more like a 3 wood compared to the newer big headed drivers, you will
definitely get more distance more often with one of the newer drivers..

    Hi
It,s no good hitting 300 yds and leaving a 9 iron in if you cannot hit a 9 iron sweet
so if you hit your driver 250 and are good with a 7 iron stick with it ?
the ball has to end up in the hole no matter what club,s you use ever think of that

3 wood goes straighter because it imparts more backspin on the ball, thus negating the effects of sidespin from a dodgy swing.

As I always say here check ebay for low low prices.

The way foward these days is with the "revolution" clubs as I call them. Basicaly the new elephant foot drivers. More forgiving and greater distances. But please check up www.gui.ie and check the ban list and make sure you get a driver that is regulated for 2008 or you will be changing.

Also, most people think its all R540s, R580s, etc.. that are non-conforming. Its only the ones with the blank faceplate in the middle -
