    Hi,
Was wondering does anyone know what type of firewall settings I would need to get mIRC working in FAS. I know the proxy settings (for internet access), but I can't get mIRC to work yet. If it helps, FAS is behind the goverment firewall.

    Any help would be nice.

you wont get it working unless they allow telnet/ssh access out (unlikely) and you can telnet to a box that has an irc app running on it and use it from there.

As far as I know IRC server normally operate on port 6667 (I think) and this WILL be blocked by your firewall.

You shouldnt be using IRC in FAS anyway you should be listening to instructors :P

If the web browser is going out via a proxy then so should MIRC. There is a very good chance they may not have port 6667 blocked as a outbound port.

Go to the mirc firewall settings in options and put their proxy in as a socks4/5 if that doesnt work try putting it in as a regular proxy.

Make sure you put the correct port into the mirc options of the proxy i.e 8080.

If all else fails, put a copy of cgi-irc somewhere you can set it up to connect to where ever you want.

how on earth is an irc client going to get to an irc server through a web proxy on port 8080?

The proxy will only handle requests destined for a pre defined range of ports and 6667 etc will not be allowed.

If the governments firewalls/proxies are configured so badly that they allow access to irc servers then Im moving to a different country.

    Hey Johnny

IRC clients have no problem going out on port 8080, its all just an exit.

See the screen shot below, myself connecting to a Irish IRC network from a public proxy listed on a random proxy listing site.

some irc networks will gline/kline you for open proxys, as you can see below some wont

    proxy.JPG

I googled for proxy list I ended up at http://www.proxyblind.org/list.shtml

    The proxy used was 80.227.56.46:8080

The proxy will only handle requests destined for a pre defined range of ports and 6667 etc will not be allowed.

A lot of the time the proxy is just setup to allow workstations out of the network and put into the IE settings. You would be amazed at the ignorance of people. :) Not just Goverment/Educational as you mentioned. I have worked for some of the biggest bluechips in the country and had no problem ircing from there.

Meh, I have managment contacts with all sorts of people. You would be amazed what goes on.

    http://www.hopster.com
Install it and check the option to make it work with mIRC. The demo only gets ~5kb/sec but that's enough for IRC. If you have net access this will work.

Hi I probably shouldnt have commented about proxies because dependant on what way they are configured you can pretty much let what you want through them.

And upon reflection I worked for a huge computer manufacturer and was able to use mIRC through my LAN connection.

But to be honest in this day and age if you were able to use mIRC through any half decently configured secure network I would be very surprised.

The LAN I am connected to at the moment barely allows access to t'internet.
