I installed firefox in work, but unfortunately it does not work on our intranet. I get loads of emails every day pointing to pages and files on the intranet, and have to copy and paste tem into Internet Explorer. I've tried to change the settings to make IE the default browser, but it doesn't seem to work. Is there some setting that firefox has to keep it the default browser, can anyone tell me how I can switch back?

Oh and also, for some reason whne I open google.com it comes up in some very odd lannguage, anyone know how I can change back to google.ie in English?

    Thanks.

right click on internet explorer>properties>programs>And check the "check to see if internet explorer is the default browser"

Probably a more direct way, but that should do it.

You should try get firefox working before bailing out back into IE

Yes I tried that but it didn't work...

I would like to get Firefox working, but strictly they do not allow it in my work, not sure why. You would need passwords etc, not going to happen :-(

what possible reason could they have for blocking firefox, and btw how are they doing it

    Where do you work Zascar?

It's probably just a matter of giving you the proxy details.

I work for a very large computer hardware company. No idea why they won't allow firefox, when I was getting my computer I asked the IT guy could I have it and he said its not allowed, something to do with security, credit cards or somehting. Weird, as firefox is much safre than IE. It asks me for proxy passwords, but I very much doubt I can find them out...

But does anyone know why whne I click a link in an email it always used firefox even though in ie the box is ticked to check if it is the default browser...

And that google in a different language is driving me nuts, help!

Your proxy password is probably authenticating from your NT logon.

When you log in in the morning, make a note of the domain box on the logon screen (you might need to click the options button). Then when firefox asks for a password, for your username stick in "domain\username" (substitute as appropriate) and stick in your network password.

They could in fact be blocking access to any browser except IE by checking the User-Agent line in the http request, but that's bypassable too.

sorry to hijack a thread but i'm having something of a similar problem, firefox is great except it just cannot get into certain pages, most notable is hotmail, so i need to change back to internet explorer, but internet explorer is not working at all anymore. I tried reinstalling it but microsoft just says its already installed no need to reinstall, i cant seem to find a way to uninstall it to put in the new one. Any ideas?

There is a Useragent switcher Extension for Firefox that allows it to pretend to be a different browser. This might work for you BlitzKrieg and also might work for Zascar.

The excuse that your IT guy gave about security and credit cards is the usual clueless answer you get in some big companies. If he knew anything at all about security he'd know not to use IE.

As seamus says though the proxy password is most likely your own Windows Login username and password, at least it is here where I work anyway. IE automatically passes this info to the proxy when needed but other browsers such as Netscape and Firefox ask for it.

I would have thought that Intranet stuff wouldn't need proxy authentication though, we only need to enter the proxy name/password for external internet access.

Some of our intranet sites use integrated windows authentication through IE, so permissions can be restricted in the case of Domain Guests, etc.

Do a search for User Agent Switcher here: https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/?application=firefox

As someone who uses Firefox with NTLM proxy autentication every day, I can say that Firefox can use the OS's login to authenticate itself if the user account its being run under is logged into the domain... You also don't need to log onto the network for intranet to work, just provide the username, not domain\username

It does the same for me, but older versions of FF didn't. Occasionally Firefox also prompts me for mine for no reason too.
Some intranets are set up to require domain authentication (namely parts of ours), as I pointed out.

Only my dad used this computer and he hasn't a clue... Google irish didn't work. i'm stuck...

On the proxy thing, I tried with my NT domain login and it does not work, but really it does not matter I just want IE back as my default browser when clicking links, and I'll just use firefox for personal browsing. Apparantly someone else got ion trouble for using firefox the other day, corporate polocy etc. I don't want to run the risk of getting caught, only want to use it for when surfing in my own time...

Anyone know how i can get IE back as the default browser??????????? Please, Anyone?

To fix the Google problem go to Tools > Options > Languages and make sure that English is at the top of the list.
