I want to install Linux onto it but it never ever works on the latest version of knoppix the bootable version works which tbh is no good i want to install Suse/Fedora or even free bsd. Can any body help me i think it may have to do something with the vga and i might have to put a command in like to turn it off vga=off

So please somebody out there help me!

I'd say start off on something like Ubunut, and use http://www.ubuntuguide.org/ and http://www.ubuntuforums.org/

it could be a hardware issue.

mate of mine got a new Dell inspiron 9300. Fedora3 wont install on it. Get a black screen after I hit enter for GUI install and text install gives the same.

also the gf had knoppix give a blank screen a fortnight ago aswell. :-/

I'll second the Ubuntu / Kubuntu (KDE version of the same) recommendation. I've got it running on my Compaq Presario and it works like a charm. Virtually no need for additional configuration after install.

Although mines an R3000, not 900.

    I'd recommend (K)Ubuntu or Mandriva.

I think it depends on the card (make/build etc.). IIRC, it does install drivers and software for wireless networking but I've never had the opportunity to try it out (my built-in wireless card is a b1tch to run in any flavour of linux :( ).

Third the recommendation of Ubuntu. Installed with no problems on my laptop after I spent ages messing around trying to get my wireless card working under Debian.

have a look here. not sure what exact model of Comapq you have (there seems to be 900, 900US, 900Z, etc) but some people seem to have installed linux successfully on it.
