well the currency is pegged to the us dollar so it's probably your best bet

Well it was (practically) fixed to the USD AT 7.80 up to last week.
The HKMA (HK Central Bank) announced it was going to let it float 500 points either side of that, gradually over the next few weeks.
So the new range will be 7.75 to 7.85.
Bring USD with you, don't think about getting HKD here.

If it helps, When I am in HKG I use the cashpoints. They are everywhere and the rate seems reasonable.

A few brief tips about HKG -

    - Octopus cards are great value for getting around Hong Kong.
    - The MTR is fantastic.
    - If you take the airport express from Ckep Lap Kok to Hong Kong (Central Station) people will try and get you to take the courtesy buses to your hotel. There is nothing wrong with the buses but the traffic is terrible. Try and take the MTR to your station.
    - I love shopping in the markets aroun Sham Sui Po. If you are there, the golden temple shopping arcade is worth a visit.
    - I guess everyone has to go up Victoria Peak once.
    - Star Ferry.

    Have fun.

    Just saw this thread...

You seem to be in Ireland, daveirl, so take euros. No sense changing your money twice - that's just a gift to the banks.

I used to find Patel's in Chungking Mansions gave good exchange rates, but there are lots of money changers in HK and the rates are posted up outside so look around.

Order them from the bank here. Was there at easter changed some money here and some there, worse to get it changed there.

Octopus cards rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 7/11, mcDonalds  , the mini buses that you can flag down, the mtr, all take octopus I can't wait til they get them here. But knowing this country it'll take decades.

Did you know the Luas already has contactless smart cards? :) Of course, that's as far as it goes. :( In HK, your Octopus is good in shops, cinemas, fast food restaurants, photocopiers...
