Don't worry I don't think that we are being invaded. Probably just training from Baldonnel

The world famous Royal Air Force Aerobatic Display Team "The Red Arrows" will be performing a flypast to mark the Press Launch of the Bray International Airshow at the Bray Seafront at 3.46pm.

The Team, flying their distinctive BAE Hawk Aircraft led by Squadron Leader Dicky Patounas, will then go on to Co. Longford to perform a full display at Abbeyshrule's 50th Anniversary of Aviation Airshow which commences at 2.00pm; the display by the Red Arrows will take place at 4.00pm.

Details of the manoeuvres performed by the team can be found on their website: www.raf.mod.uk/reds

That was pretty crazy! I think I remember hearing the RedArrows from my gaf as when doing a flyby of Lansdowne last year for some rugby match .... but it was no way as loud and ominous as whatever went by me today, not even close :).

They change their livery from time to time. If worst came to worst and the UK faced invasion they become a combat squadron (light attack, I think).

Ah good old boards. Just around 15:45 I heard the noise of a plane get louder, and louder, and louder until I had to step out the balcony (I'm in the city centre) and saw a group of jets flying in formation overhead. They appeared red, so I wondered if it was the Red Arrows performing for an airshow. And I knew that, if I was to find the answer anywhere, it'd be here. I wasn't disappointed. Bless you all!

Something to watch on your coffee break, but the noise of them can get a bit annoying at times.

Yeah, I'm not a warmonger, but it is really embarrassing that we're the only developed country that can't defend its own airspace.

First, it’s a basic of sovereignty.

Second, there's an unspoken assumption in government circles that in the event of a crisis (oh lets say, a Dublin flight hijacked and directed toward Sellafield) that the RAF would intervene. There is no guarantee they would get there in time.

Before anyone says 'too expensive', South Africa, you know the place where one in every five people is suffering from AIDS/HIV, has gone on a huge defence spending spree including the purchase of new Grippen fighters from Sweden.

At the very least we should have some air defence capability on the East Coast.

What the hell do we need jets for?
We were offered a load of Phantom F-4's by the US and Israel not to mentionas many Huwie helicopters as we wanted and a few other bits and bobs and the Government said "nah we're good, cheers" they dont have the money to keep them. Servicing planes is *ching* *ching*

So, who would you have defend Sellafield?

I'm talking about a threat emanating out of our airspace against Sellafield. That would be our responsibility, certainly while in our airspace. And if push comes to shove, a responsibility to pursue it into British airspace.

BTW the threat could take a multiplicity of forms. Not just a conventional hijacking. An executive Jet from one of the Royal families of the Emirates perhaps? Wonder if Army Intelligence have considered that? Any Army brass in today?

As for the Phantoms, I'd have turned them down as well, way too complex, antiquated, and totally inappropriate for our purposes.

Grippens are modern, robust and relatively cheap. They are also designed to be easy to maintain. The idea was that soldiers from Sweden’s conscript army could maintain them etc.

Oh believe me I heard and saw the fucckers! :p Jumped outta my seat and ran to the window. From the direction they seemed to be coming from they flew right across the airport flight path (live beside the airport). Must be headin back to England I suppose.
