Can you use a lightsaber if you're not a jedi?

Someone asked me this at school, and I bluffed an answer because i'm supposed to be the expert (sad, i know) and I thought this sounded reasonable:

You can't use a lightsaber unless you're a jedi, because you have to have metichlorians (sic) in you - so they can react with the crystal in the saber.

In the game Jedi Knight II Outcast, there's some plot about the empire growing lightsaber crystals, i think...

Yeah I don't know. Someone set me straight on this one

Lightsabers were built in one of two ways. They either had to be turned on with the Force or they had a switch. Don't forget Solo used Luke's lightsaber in Jedi.

To be as good as a Jedi with a lightsaber though, you must use the Force.

    Oh yeah! Forgot about Solo..

    ...maybe he's a bit of a jedi. :P

On my quest for truth, I found this amusing page: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/lightsaber6.htm

well grevious is'nt a jedi and he uses four of them, then there's solo...so i guess the answer is no...you dont need to be a jedi.

I think the hole thing about using a lightsaber is you have to be a jedi. Unless your a robot using a lightsaber could lead to some very bad although funny accidents. Think of vader. Mr Torso except you probably do it to yourself.

But using a lightsaber would be no different than using a sword.

You can graze yourself with a sword. A lightsaber would burn right through you.
A sword got nothing on it. Jedi and Sith can use them because they are intouch with the force and have much greater reaction time.

Yes but like a sword, Jedi would have to learn to use a lightsaber. And it's already been proved that non Jedi can use lightsabers.

Yes but what im saying is they can but most dont as its to dangerous

i would say the reason that they are not widely used is that they are so rare and hard to create, and to actually use the sword properly to deflect laser shots requires jedi reactions

Yeah, but come on. I'd still like to have on even if i couldn't DUEL with it.

Seems like a pretty useful thing to have.

Or even a little dagger-like saber for just cutting things.

This is explained in one of the books, can't remember which right now.

The force is in every living thing. The lightsaber is activated by the force, so any intelligent being should have the ability to switch one on with their life force, but it is difficult to channel and control it.

The jedi have an ability to manipulate and control the force, so it means they have a natural ability to use the light saber and can activate it from a distance.

And Grievous said the he is "trained in your jedi arts" so he has to have some force sensitivity!

I'd say it's more a combination of the training he recieved from Dooku and his cybernetic enhancements that allow him to have Jedi like reflexes.

But it looks like he is organic inside with a heart, eyes and prolly a brain so he'd have to have mediclorians and therefore be able to channel the force!

"little dagger-like saber for just cutting things."

i always assumed it was just a lazer sword and anyone could use it, if they were able to make one/get one.

but, it be stupid for anyone to use it, in the days of lazer guns etc. unless you had super cool skills. i just thought it complemented the jedi well.

think back to episode 1 when they were on naboo when anikan saw qui's sword and asked him if he was a jedi! he answers that mabey he killed a jedi and took it implying that not only jedi could use 1!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 311 ✭✭<Jonny>

Well, it implies it, yes. Qui Gon knew that Anakin probably didn't know **** about the jedi, though .. so he might have just been double bluffing.

In the Clone Wars, Yoda gets angry that the secret location of the Temple that has the LightSaber crystals in it has been disclosed. So maybe only Jedi knew where that was, hence disabling non-Jedi from creating a lightsaber, but not from using one. I use two words when it comes to lightsabers, and frankly i think it boils down to anyone being able to USE one, but only Jedi/Sith (people with a knowledge/control of the force) being able to WIELD a lightsaber...
