Problem with 9800 Pro drivers after formatting.

I have just formatted my hard drive and I tried to install the latest ATI drivers. After a restart, a message popped up saying "CLI failed to initialise". Thinking that this cant be a good thing, I uninstalled the drivers from the control panel. However, during the uninstallation another message popped up saying "Error during uninstallation process". It asked for a restart so I presumed they had uninstalled. I restarted, uninstalled the card again from device manager.

I then downloaded and installed the latest Omega drivers to see if that would help. They installed ok but the card is not performing half as well as it should be.

    Take a look here.

When I change the AGP speed from 0 to 8, it asks to restart. When I do and check the AGP speed, guess what, its back to 0 again. Anything I do that needs the card looks crap. Whats going on? Is there something I need to enable in the BIOS seeing as its a fresh install? I never had to change anything in there previously to make my card do what its supposed to.

    All help appreciated. Thanks.

mine reports agp speed at 0 aswell even though its an agp 8x board, but i get the expected performance out of the card ie: 5500 3dmark03 stock speeds

While you are waiting you should post up more details on your system .

I think Ive sorted the problem. Ran 3dmark 01 for the craic and it got 17,794 marks, which is reasonable. Thought I was in trouble there. Thanks for suggestions guys. :)

Once you've reformatted, the first thing to do is install the microsoft .net framework. The ATI catalyst drivers need it to work otherwise when you install the drivers without it then you get that error. Did it myself twice ;)

i had a similar problem when i updated my 9800 pro drivers. the card would randomly crash. i just went back to the drivers on the cd. they do me fine. also it started to crash when i got sp2. so i got rid of that too

Hi. I'm still drunk, but the "CLI failed to initialise" bit reminded me of a problem with another card. If its a Dell machine, goto the Dell site, login with your Dell "service tag", and download the video driver. Did it for another PC, and it worked nicely. The standard driver came up with the ****ty error, but with the "Dell" driver, there woz no problem. PM me if ye want: I'll be sober tomorrow.

CLI is just the runtime of the Catalyst Control Centre, which in simpler terms is the quick access ATi icon that appears near the clock. AFAIK it is not absolutely vital that this runs and that would explain why 3dMark etc. runs ok for you. It is just a convenience if you need to often change graphics settings like for example; resolution/bit depth or enable a second desktop/display. It is reliant on Microsoft .Net Framework (and also requires access to the internet for bug reporting or something like that) so if that is not installed the catalyst control centre can't run either.
