    Does it spin at boot?

Is it set as Slave or master ? Is it IDE?

i presume you have it on the same ide cable as the main harddrive and set the jumper to slave?

edit:// misread the post a bit, just check your jumper settings

See if it's recognized if you plug it in on its own.

That way you should be able to rule out if the problem is with the new HDD itself or not.

if it's two ide drives on the one cable, make sure the one with the os on it is set to master and the other to slave, if no joy with that, boot one up at a time to check if one might be faulty, also a bios reset might be worth a try

Is the drive even seen in the bios or not -

    Joe,

check out the PCB version of the Motherboard and go to the ASUS BIOS site and see if you need a BIOS Upgrade.
    ASUS BIOS Download Page

If this doesnt work and you have tried all the obvious then try it in another PC.

    Double check the cabling -

    Update the bios

    Does the drive spin up?

How about the power cable. Have you tried switching it for one you know works?

Disconnect all other drives (including optical) and try a boot on it's own.

Check if the drive spins up.

If not I suppose it's bjorked.

If it does but is still not detected by the bios then try it in a different pc as you have already stated you have checked the IDE cable. Or you could try a BIOS flash if you know what you're doing.

tried everything mentioned except flashing the bios cause i need a floppy drive for that, also if i start up with pc with no hdd in it i can get into the bios but if i try it with just my new hdd it stalls on the post screen and i just hear the hdd spinning

Well the final test is try it on a mates pc.

    If it works good.

    If it doesn't return it.

The A7N8X is recent enough to not have problems with 137GB+ large drives, besides it could still detect them.
If the computer actually freezes while trying to detect the unused drive, it would suggest a faulty drive, (or less likely, cable, or connector which you've checked)

A brand new drive always should get a complete checkout with the manufacturers tools from the net, as they don't do complete tests on cheap retail drives. Buying new OEM IDE drives as a consumer you can find 30% critical fail rates requiring a return to base (stat from personal purchases).

Putting it into another computer, replacing the existing drive, copying it's jumper settings is a good way to confirm to yourself and convince tech support, though rechecking that the maxtor works should be good enough.
