Problems installing new dvd/rw

I'm waiting for all the parts to be delivered for a computer that I'm attempting to build. So, in the meantime I decided to see if i could install my new dvd/rw on my old dell p3 to figure out any problems that may arise when i build for real!!

already there is a problem :(

i've physically installed the drive (no problem there) but when I start the machine it says that "the drive isnt recognised - press f1 to procede to windows of f2 for bios" - something like that.

F1- windows can't detect the new hardware (i.e. no D: drive) and because the driver comes on cd i'm kinda stuck

F2 - when i went into bios it says that it is an unknown device - i just left it to auto detect config, i.e. as it was before.

    any help??

i wonder is this some incompatability between my old pc's motherboard (i'm guessing 4 or 5 yrs old) and the new dvd/rw?

ps when im not taking the machine apart the pc has a bog standard cd rom which worked when i replaced it.

    thanks for the help

Are the jumpers set correctly to the relative poisition on the IDE cable? (i.e. slave for slave, master for master)

i assume so. that said I just unplugged the cd-rom and jammed in the new drive. As i'm barely familiar with that end of things (i'm gonna have to do my homework) i would have assumed that if the cd rom ran fine so would the dvd recorder

*sigh* If you're going to start assuming anything about computers, always assume you'll be wrong...

Time to get the auld manual out I think...

No manual with installation instructions came with the DVD? In that case, Google the make and model looking for jumper settings.

oh right, well then yeah prolly the jumper settings, if it's on the same ide cable as the harddrive it'll be set to slave, if it's on its own ide cable set it to master, the sticker on the drive should have an illustration to show how to set the jumper

    THATS IT!!!

thanks guys. I would never had imagined that it would be that little piece of plastic and metal. That said, getting stuck on such a minor problem and so early on doesn't bode well

    once again, thanks
