I will be finishing a 4 year degree in a computer programming course in a week and I will be actively searching for work over the summer, I have had 2 interviews with success, in both interviews I was asked how much I would expect to earn, does anyone have any idea how much money a recently qualified software developer would earn per year?

    I would say around €31k

    Look at salary.monster.ie or http://www.irishjobs.ie/resource_centre/SalarySurvey.asp?SID=213

Ooops I looked at the 1-3 years exp bit.

You'll likely get more - I started on €20 with only two years college behind me in a QA role.

Graduated last year from a BSc in computers.. most ppl started on 22-24K, some were unlucky enough to start on 19-21 (in saying that they werent very technical jobs) .. and some very lucky to get up to 30K...
but the average starting salary in a good IT company was 24K.. i advise you to go for that figure...

ok i didnt know what to expect and 22-24 imo would be a great wage to start on, after all, i will probably still be living a students life for the first year :), thanks for the advice downtime, cmaclo

just one last question, do companies usually train you in when you begin employment or are you thrown in at the deep end on a project or something

In my experince you'll get a bit of both - some training, induction and then given some tasks to do to see how good you are.

Not the thread-jack but what would someone with just over 5 years web development experience expect?

    Cheers

It all depends on how many applicants are going for the job as well. Companies that have good screening processes generally pay better. Companies that just take applicants and then interview them with the odd test usually pay low - medium.

From what I've seen merchant / investment banks pay the most by a good bit.

for your first job try ur best to get a graduate position.. companies usually have set training programmes for these and they always look good on a CV when ur going for ur next job...

Also dont be too picky about the salary when its ur first job out of college, its usually the experience u get that will determine your next salary... a mate of mine was doing a IT job in a bank for 19K that he got straight after graduating, he did this for 6 months, when he went for his next job he told them he was on 29K in the bank so they'd have to pay him more... the jammy b****d ended up getting 30K!..

Goes to show, if he had've been honest he would've lost out on alot of money....
