Security bug affecting Outlook 2003

I keep my Microsoft XP and Outlook 2003 software regularly updated using Windowsupdate and Officeupdate.

I was sending an e-mail the other day (there was a single item in my outbox), and you can imagine my surprise when Outlook announced that it was sending four e-mails!

When I installed Outlook I set it to confirm read receipt sending with myself for each item. I checked the Outlook settings and found that they had been altered to send read receipts back to senders of e-mails automatically without confirmation. I suspect that this alteration was done by some update in Windows or officeupdate (as nobody else has access to my PC).

One wonders how many spam list publishers have received confirmation that my e-mail address was indeed valid due to this apparent Microsoft negligence? Why don’t Microsoft show read-acknowledge e-mails in the out basket and when sent in the sent basket? Bastards!

Yeah it's a nuisance, happened on my work machine as well, it was annoying.

However, I fail to see what the relevance of it is to the security forum?
