is it really that bad ... I have driven all over the world, including in new york. I just like having the car when I am away so I can take impromptu day trips off the beaten track, I wouldn't be using it in the city at all !!

I've driven in milan/northern italy and it was fine, rome did seem a bit hectic though. If you've driven in ny it shouldn't be a problem though.

The underground/metro in Rome is easy to use and incredibly useful so check it out as soon as you can. Avoid the high priced tourist trap restaurants on the via veneto, etc. and go slightly off the beaten track for great food at much better prices. Be prepared for a low level of english comprehension.

I highly recommend the Coliseum - fab. :D
But not the incredibly annoying hawkers outside it

    .... as a city.

I would never live in Rome. Ever. But the sights of Rome are breathtaking. Saint Peters and the Vatican museum will blow your socks off. The Pantheon. The Forum. All astounding. Someplace that everyone has to see.
