Just bought this unit from Dell together with a Power adaptor (for auto/air use €70+Vat). It should have been for 1,800+VAT+charger but I got the rep down to 1,555+Vat. Saving of about €320.00, just goes to show what sort of mark ups Dell have on their products if sales rep was willing to drop that amount.
Still a preety hot laptop for the price :D

    Ha ha,
Its a work PC so I had to get one of the "big" antivirus packages. If it goes belly up the boss can't give out to me. Use AVG Free on my home PC :)

sounds like a good deal - did you do it over the phone and what was your angle for getting the rep to drop down (i.e. did you say thered be plenty more business coming from your work or something)?

I've bought about 4 desktops from them previously & told him there was a possibility of 2 more laptops in a month or so ;) In order to process the deal quicker than an invoice I said I'd pay by credit card if he'd increase rpm from 5400 to 7200 on the 60GB HD (about €65 extra) and he did :D

no ghosting on dvds, haven't really tried to play any games to be honest. makes me sad when i goto my 17" LCD on my PC though, it can't live up to the 1920 x 1200 :(

U got a good deal alright..

I dont think you got as good a deal as you think you did, i built the machine on the small business site to your specs, only thing missing is the travel charger (So I added XP Pro instead) and the price i got was 1,592 ex vat there was a load of upgrades on the standard bundle, so you could have got a much lower price from your rep, here is a copy & paste for reference. Actually looking at the price you paid, it looks like the only thing the rep did was through in free delivery.

    That's not that great.

    I got

    1.7Ghz Pentium M
    17" widescreen (admittedly res in only 1440 * 900)
    60GB HDD
    1GB RAM
    Ati Radeon 9700 120MB GFX
    8x DVD +/- RW
Intel ProWireless 2200 b/g wireless adapter
4 year next business day warranty (kind of essential for a laptop)

All for 1500 euro, back in January.

Even though I'm not a fan of Dell.

Using the outlet site, if you're willing to wait and watch,

    Inspiron 6000 PM 750 1.86GHz 2MB L2 533MHz - - 8x DVD+/-RW (Multiformat) - D Series No Floppy Drive - - 60GB 7200rpm ATA/100 HDD - - 65W AC adpater - DVD Cyberlink Decoder Software - - 1024MB 400MHz DDR2 SDRAM Memory - - 9 cell Li-Ion 80WHr primary battery - - Internal V.92 - Intel ProWireless 2915 802.11a/b/g Mini PCI - - 15.4 inch WSXGA+ LCD Panel - - 128MB Video Graphic Card ATI M22 - Win XP SP2 Home - - English - Win XP SP2 Home -

    Subtotal 970.51
    Freight 10.00
    VAT 205.91
    Total 1,186.42

And you can add a 20" LCD for 450+vat instead of 830, for the advertised front page price.

Now that's a markup. By default they cost more than the equivalent Apple display.

They had some kind of mixup on their pricing about 6 weeks ago where if you picked the free double memory you also got to take EUR220 off - so I got me a 510m 1.7GHz Pentium M (735), SXGA+ screen, 1Gb memory, 60Gb disk, DVD rewriter, Bluetooth+.11b/g for EUR900 including VAT. At least I assume it was some sort of a mixup, because the next week I assembled the same system on the site and the price was over EUR500 more! Usually the discounts each week change (extra HD, extra memory, 150 off, etc) but the net effect is about the same.

I'm reasonably happy with the system. Keyboard's not great but at that price I'm not complaining.
