Computer Problem

    Last night my PC died.

When I try to turn it on I get nothing, no booting noise. I checked the power cable and socket and they were both OK.

I am thinking the fault most likely lies in the power supply and my first plan of action is to replace the power supply.

    Anybody got any other ideas?

    T.

    Borrow someone's PSU first.

Does your psu have and on/off switch at the back, I've been caught out by that an embarrassing number of times.

it's more than likely the psu.. replace it. If you haven't tried a power cable you know is working, try that first.

Have a look at the motherboard - most new boards have lights on them if there's power to them. If the board supports Wake-on-Lan then the network port will have lights on as well - without the pc actually being powered on. This will tell you if there's power getting to the board. It doesn't necessarily mean that the psu is ok but it is an indicator.

Like Khannie said borrow another psu before forking out your cash in case that's not the problem.

If you know how to open it make sure the Power on Switch is connected correctly.

Also an odd one I seen recently - a friend had the same problem. In this case one of the USB connections was faulty, one of the Pins (the Power one) was bent up and shorting the front of the PC.
