A mate of mine is looking into buying a laptop and with me being vaugely techy, i naturaly get grilled on the matter.
i know sweet fa about the differences between the types of intel processors available nor which brands would be the wisest choice for that price range.

the main requirements are a large widescreen display...
other than that pretty much anything goes so long as the specs are alright.
it'll be used for cad so i'm guessing that crappy onboard gfx chipsets are a no-no. but in the price range he's going for i doubt they would be very commonplace...

any help would be greatly appreciated. (i'm honestly not being a lazy mofo - i've got no internet connection at home and browsing in work isn't really an option)

Browsing at work is a no no yet you've got a post count of over 6,000?
    Hmmmm..... ;)

Only kidding. I'm fairly interested in this topic as I'm in the market for a laptop myself and I wouldn't know too much about the nuts and bolts of computers.

So will it have to be mobile or is it a Desktop replacement type machine?
If you're looking for a mobile machine Intel Centrino is the way to go.
Avoid Celeron at all costs. Pentium's tend to make the laptop more of a desktop(replacement) type machine, I dunno If you're wanting to go that route.
    AMD processors are good also.
I'm presuming you'll want a nice shiny screen, if so, I know for definate most Sony VAIO's have very nice screens, but the price you will pay for a good spec sony will be pretty high.
You'll obviously want something with a lot of RAM, 1gb should be ok, but don't settle for anything less.
A fast hard-drive is probably what you need too, so look for a disk of no less than 5400 RPM, and I'd recommend a 7200RPM disk if you can.
I don't really know much about graphics cards to be honest, but definately don't go for onboard graphics. I have an ATI Radeon 128MB card and it runs the latest games perfectly, however I don't know how it would compare doing graphics/CAD work.

only been working here for 2 months and i've already recieved a verbal warning over my internet browsing :p

    cheers dawballz.
i think he's after more of a desktop replacement than a sleek mobile pc... will have to check though.
not too fond of recommending a viao tbh, they seem to be the ipods of windows based laptops. (style and substance at a crazy price)

Yeah but I think the VAIO's are good machines(could be wrong). Personally I wouldn't go for one though because you would get better specs for the same price from a different manufacturer.
