Hey guys, having a problem with my DVD drive as you can tell. When i try play the movie the sound plays back but not the video, I have been able to play the same DVD previously and have tried running it on PowerDVD / Asus DVD XP / Windows Media Player / WinDVD4 and IAplayer and the problem persists.

It would seem the problem began after installing nimo/klite/xvid codecs, i removed the packs and installed one single codec pack but it still wont play back. I checked the regions (even though i played the DVD before in the same drive) and they are correct (region 2 on the player and the DVD). The DVD in question is Star Wars: Episode IV / V and VI, the same problem also occurs with Wargames and any other dvd I have.

Here's the info i picked up from PowerDVD:

    Display Information:
    Video Mode: Progressive
    Display Mode: DirectDraw
    FourCC Code: YUY2
    Surface Type: Overlay

I dont really know alot about DVD codecs and how updateable they are but any suggestions would be accepted.

    Thanks.

I had a similar problem before, did you try getting the latest DivX codecs/drivers? That's what I did the last time and it sorted the problem.

I dont think divx has anything to do with dvd movies (assuming its a proper dvd).
I'd uninstall the codec packs and player software and reinstall it (leaving out the codec packs).

I know you've tried a load of playback programs, but I beg of you, try Cliprex DVD Player.
Google it, or it's on www.download.com

I had the same problem, still do, but I use VLC media player.
Plays everything(with sound!) from DVD to VCD to mpg, avi etc.
For AVI files you don't even need to install codecs.
You can download a zip version which you don't need to install(just unzip and run)
Or an install version- just install and run.

edit; off topic but is the new star wars not Episode 3?
how then is there an episode 4? Did they go backwards?

the original ones were IV, V and VI. the new ones are prequels. did you not wonder why anakin skywalker was a kid in episode I and not a dude in a black suit?

    Surface Type: Overlay
The problem could be related to this, try getting the latest drivers for your video card. If that doesn't help try disabling overlay in your DVD playback software. You could also play around with your video card settings, there should be options relating to overlay somewhere.

Sorry, I never watched star wars... Well maybe when I was about 4 or something, but nothing I can remember.
