    hey folks,
i've got over 1,200 photos to print up for my thesis this july and am wondering if anyone can advise me towards where i could get these done for a reasonable price, or perhaps even a cheap one!?!
i dont necessarily need them on photographic paper, however they do need to be of good quality. would a normal colour printing service suffice? all advice would be gratefully received.

im sure if you went to a few of the online printing places they'd give you some kind of discount for this kind of massive bulk printing... I mean normally theyre priced on a sliding scale for over 10 prints so I'd say you'd be in line for a pretty decent discount per print.

after coming to my senses.. delivery of 1200 a4 sized prints from any online stores would most likely cost more than the prints themselves.... I may get kicked and beaten for this but it may be worth ringing spectra to see if they'll strike a deal with you.. On their site they go as high as 75+ prints and dont give any price for that. Either that or try a few established photo labs in the city and try to make some kind of deal.. otherwise you're going to end up selling a lung to finance the mass printing operation

holy crap 1200. thats alot alright.. yeah go to an irish company which you can collect from.

spectra are a bit rubbish, best off going to a small independantly run place and negotiate a deal.

is it from digital or film as i can get you a very good price if it's from film?

actually saying that, i got 500 10x8's from photobox.co.uk for a pretty good price per print about €1.50 a print as far as I recall

what kind of thesis will include 1200 pages of photos?

its digital. i saw reads do a 70cent per a4 so i'm hoping to get a better price than that. but i dont know if thats just colour printing, but i suppose thats all i want. i went into a couple of smaller photo printing places, but so far, i've only come across one's that will print on photo paper, which i think is going to make the price higher.
looks like i'm gonna have to sell a lung anyway, the binding is costing me 700euro (32 volumes) and this is only my masters. oh, and the thesis is a catalogue of 200 year old music...i'm providing a photographic index to illustrate all the idiosynracies of the stuff as the physical items are too old and fragile for people to be handling...the thing is i have three volumes of photos (probably about 200 photos per volume) but i need four copies of each (3 for the exams board and one for myself, hence the massive amounts)
thanks for the suggestions...keep them coming.... :)

try www.printing.com , I think they are in Drury street

reads just print on colour copier quality paper for the 70c

how much coverage is on each A4 page on average , is it text and a few photos etc , ( double sided /sigle sided ?) I can ask around for a few quotes on my travels if you can provide more info

Also are they in word format or pdf or something else ?

the thing is, as it's only a academic (rather than a photographic) portfolio they dont expect the photos on proper photo paper. not that i'm adverse to the idea, as of course it would look better, i'm just keeping my options open.
the coverage is 100% - all photo. single sided. jpeg format.
600 photos, four or five copies of each

I'll ask around , the quantity doesn't add up though ....600 photos and 4 of each ? 1200 in total ?,

how many originals with how many copies of each do you need ? and are the photos your own work ?

i know, i just realised that myself. im hoping it wont be more than 1200. i'm in denial here.
thats the amount of photos at the mo: 600x5copies (600x4copies if it's gonna cost a bomb, i'll get the other lot done at a later date, but it makes sense to do in bulk, right?)
i'm going to try and cut it down tho and get rid of the common ones...
yes they are all my own work.

I'll get you some initial quotes based on 600 x2 then

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,479 ✭✭✭catho_monster

    more like 225x5

i know this is all very confusing/messy
i'm still trying to get my own head around it.

    thanks... :)

    you could try bonusprint
    cheapest for a 8"x12"
(20x30cm) based on 10+ €1.30 per print but I would call them and see what they can offer

Onlt other idea would be to buy one of Dell new Colour lasers ( around €550 euro before haggling including one batch of ink) and start printing them yourself and then sell the printer afterwards ...

wow, thats some amount of money. i've got a quote from a place in rathmines for 40cent a print. i think i might be onto something compared to 1.30euro. i am considering buying a printer too now...
thank you for your help formatman

Surely to buy a printer would be the best option. I have a large colour printer at work and any photos that I have printed have been excellent. Maybe you could rent a printer for a day and pay for the ink ?

What's the place in Rathmines that quoted you 40c a print, if you don't mind me asking?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,479 ✭✭✭catho_monster

the buisness depot, on lower rathmines road, for colour printing of a ditigal image, not photographic print. it's not their regular price, but the deal they are giving me because of the amount of printing required by me, and because they're doing my thesis binding of 40 books for me too...

Epson (OR CANON) printers can be purchased cheaply and i found a little shop in Finglas no more than 2 mins from the M50 and they have the most reasonable ink :) . They have a map at
    www.justmedia.ie
.... from there beg borrow or whatever a computer and print away..... seems i got about 500 prints for between 5 to 10 Euro. Sorrow if I am late replying and you have paid through the teeth already.
