You need the dual tuner. The UK one doesn't work very well in Ireland.

well, the UK version is UHF only so once you're not using it with a cable system I think it should be fine

Richer Sounds, Belfast do the Panasonic DMR E55EBS. Suitable for the Republic too. I got one and it is great. They deliver for £10.

ya, that's the one I was looking at, good price too!

I can't see anything better out there with hard-drive / DVD RAM option...so, suppose it's my only option

I'd have gone for the Sky+ but there are trees in my way :(
so bought a HD DVD-R recorder - and to be honest hardly ever use the timeslip function as it takes so long for it to initialise (sometimes 1 minute from power on) - DVD Ram could be slow also? - i do use it a lot for recording and watch later and storing - really useful.

RAM disks are very expensive and unlikely to play in many pcs.

Maybe you should consider again a cheap hd recorder without DVD Recorder (about 200 euros or less) or a DVD+R recorder without HD (again about 200 )
LG and Thompson and others do them in this price range.

DVD RAM was the fastest rewritable DVD technology (5X) until the start of this year (now +RW is 8X with -RW not far behind).

DVD-RAM will be increased to 16X this year.
It is unclear if +RW and -RW can reach this.

    DVD-RAM is rewritable 100,000 times.
+RW and -RW are rewritable 1000 times.

More and more (LG and Panasonic always, Benq, NEC and others in the summer) will be supporting DVD-RAM.
