John Martyn played in Vicar Street 10 days ago and seeing as this newsgroup is gone so quiet, I thought I might as well break the silence.
John Martyn is not jazz although I guess he is kind of Blues; he is unique.
He has a gravelly voice that makes doors rattle on the low notes but is kind of beautiful and smoky on the high notes; he has a hell of a range. He also has a clear and powerful guitar style. He used to play using an echo machine. He has been making cult classic albums since the late 1960s and his album Solida Air from the early 70s is an all time classic.

Anyway, he is still alive and now lives in Kilkenny and despite having both legs amputated a few years ago is still gigging and he is simply stunning. He played with a bass/drums/keys backing band and did about 90 minutes to stunned mega aproval and did no encore and it was the best gig I have seen in ages.
Please go see him if he arrives anywhere near you to do a gig.
Hi recent albums are also surprisingly good (after all these years; he still writes great songs).

Yeah saw him there last year and he blew me away. I've been a big fan for years, solid air and Bless the weather are legendary albums. I think he's only had one leg amputated though. What type of setlist did he play??

Aaargh he could sue me for misrepresenting his injuries.
He played some recent songs that I did not recognise the first of which was about George Bush. From his classic songs, I can remember (cannot remember proper titles and can only remember bits of the playlist): Couldn't Love you More, Don't want to know about evil, May you Never, I'd Rather be the Devil.

The George bush song is "hail to the Chief" afaik, he opened with that the time I saw him and it's a classic

yea, I was at that gig too http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/search.php?searchid=673200

He is totally amasing! I love when he played on his own, the band were great but nothing beats just him and a guitar!!

Ahhhh fair play! I did not see that.
I take it you liked the gig then :-).
He is indeed amazing; totally even.

I ended up sitting beside two people about the same age as me and also from around Marino who also had been following him since the 70s. I came away with a warm glow (or maybe that was the 4 pints of Guinness).
