Keyring to avoid static shocks

Feel free to move this thread to another forum .....

Anyone know if there ever was or is it still possible to buy keyrings for discharging static electricity — I’m getting crucified with shocks. Nearly burnt the poo out of the top of my finger after getting out of the car the last day.

And I ain't goin changing my wardrobe to avoid them ....

Well, the only way to prevent static is wearing a grounded wrist strap or special ESD sole shoes and ESD flooring. I don't think a keyring would work?

car needs to be earthed as far as I know...so maybe touch the keyrey off the ground before you get out :p , or just buy the static strips from you local DIY shop.

If you attach a small metal chain to the chassis of the car and let that run along the ground it should do the trick... theoretically.

I'm in the same boat Buckfast. It was funny for a while, but its been really bad lately. Not so funny anymore.

on your car there should be a little wire/plastic thingy dangleing down to stop the static

It's not just the car that's the problem, it's constantly happening.

Not as much fun as Johnny B had in 'Misfits of Science' all those years ago.

Touch the ground with your key or smth before you get out of the car.

Err... that won't do anything, it isn't the key that's building up a static charge, it's the car, and the rubber tyres prevent the static from getting to the ground.

If you have a metal key the electricity should pass through his body to the ground. The car builds up a static charge that includes him, grounding himself before he gets out or touch's anything should prevent shocks

I have this problem too, I've had sparks jump from my finger when using the lift in work. And it hurts, allbeit for a minute but it's annoying. I'm rather static. The strips for the car is easy, but to earth yourself is tough. You could stick a nail through your shoe, not the best idea. Plus earthing yourself would also make you very unsafe, ie if an electrical device was to fail, you'd be more conductive then the earth wire.

I don't think it would work, since the car is the major carrier of the static electricity, and that isn't grounded by the sounds of it. Any physicists out there care to chime in? :)

whenever i'm on a airplane i seem to pick up a "Shocking :p 2 amount of static. It's fun on long flights as when the trolly dolly goes to give you the drink you shock them =).

But yeah if i completely discharge a large amount of static in 1 go it can hurt , and even numb a body part for a long time :(.

Havne't got any soloution for you , but a keyring won't work, i know that much.

Has it anything to do with the clothes you wear? Certain fabrics build up static.

I like static. Id doesnt really hurt, and its kinda fun to get a shock out of nowhere.

Perhaps me and Lump are the only ones to experience a REAL static shock. I'm not talking about a little pussy jump, some of these are well nasty.

I hear ya, I've developed a phobia of touching doors and metal objects! Apparently touching things with a key before you touch them helps. But I just can't get into the habit. As for getting out of the car, touching the window of the door when you're closing it works for me. I don't know the science behind that statement but it certainly works for me. My gf's car has a plastic strip on the door, that seems to work as well.

I've been getting shocks myself lately. I thought it was my shoes (got new ones with rubber soles), but it might be the dry weather. I just close the door by the window as suggested above, and it's fine. Although I got a fairly big one yesterday when I accidentally touched the metal part of the ticket machine when leaving the carpark.

I started closing the door by the window in the last fortnight, but I've left big greasy mighty munch eatin stains on the glass! Anyhoo, that doesn't work for me, I still get a mad shock on the handle of the front door.

One weird thing — at home earlier I hovered my hand over the door handle and touched the paint ... I could hear the static discharging and got no shock. However, later when I tried the same thing, but just touching the door straight, it didn't work.

One thing you could try is growing a pair and stop acting like a pussy.
    Man, a little shock....

I get static shocks every time I get out of my seat at the computer. I like touching metal slowly and seeing the spark.

Hearing that makes me want to be a freak like you... if only for a minute :)
