    Does this really work?

I didnt notice any difference in spain, but I was putting greasy sunscreen on my face.

Back when I was a teenager I was advised that the old sunbed cures spots, and it does!

i had nasty spots in my teens, and i moved to tenerife when i was 19, and within a couple of weeks of regular sun exposure (not over the top, just an hour or so a day, maybe less every last one of the buggers had disappeared. left tenerife and they came back (although not so bad).

went back, and they were gone again.

i'm guessing that tanning beds do the same thing.

Is this just an excuse for a guy to use a sunbed or does it work? Tan.ie is that not just the 30 second spray on stuff?

I found sauna's to be a better option, and there are no "long term effects" (sagging face when reach 40) maybe carcinagenic..
But if I couldnt access a sauna I would try the sun bed, no doubt , spots are a b0ll0x,,,

I thought everyone knew this... i guess not.. its not a miracle either.. Sunlight is the best thing for your skin. It sorts you right up.. hence when you go away your skin never looks better!!! You should be warned though that while its fine when you sun yourself, it can flare up if you stop!!! Also UV while helpful in some ways is mroe harmful than good. Will not stop me laying out in the sun of course but just eb warned.

I used to have bad acne in my teens and I found sea water is actually great for it.

Sunbeds can work well but I found once I stopped using them the spots came back.. If you have really bad skin the best and most permanent way of getting rid of them is a dose of anti biotics... They can be a little bit expensive but well and truly worth every penny... Im in my twenties and thankfully dont have that problem anymore :D but I know from experience for a teenager it can be quite distressing.. Id recommend to anyone who's got bad skin to go to the doctor cause there are medicines you can get which WILL clear it up for you...

Seriously, I agree, skin cancer much looks better than spots!

    :)

    Nah, I understand your situation...

You know you'll get the same results if you just spend time outside in the sun? Also, it's free.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,899 ✭✭✭lacuna

Sunlight is good for the skin. The skin forms vitamin D when exposed to the sun which is good for your skin and may be part of the reason your skin looks healthier after a blast of sunshine. But the UV rays in sunlight and especially in sunbeds can seriously irreparably damage your skin. It's not necessarily the best way to get rid of spots. Especially if you've got fair skin.

I would disagree with this, i was prescibed antibiotics for acne, didn't work in the slightest, and made me feel quite sick

Thats not very nice to be laughing at someone with no legs and a brain tumor

it may seem like the tanning is curing them but in actual fact it will just dry your skin out even more which will in turn make your skin secrete even more oil which will in turn only bring them back.

the dangers of sunbeds alone should put you off this idea.

You say that you're skin produces Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight? Wouldnt ti make sense to just buy some vitamin tablets then?

As for my skin, it used to be very bad, but it was my diet. I cut out chocolate and take aways and now it's fine. tbh just drink plenty of water, watch your diet and if you want, clearasil it up for a while!

id agree the sauna does the same thing, good sweat to clear out your pores.

Suppose regular exercise would be a good idea, but lets face it, this is the internet, home of the lazy.

Rather go to a sauna or a steam room that a tanning bed anytime tbh.

You can be the cleanest person in the world with the best diet and you can still have acne or be prone to spots. There are a lot more reasons for spots than this. You can have a hormone imbalance which can lead to massive amounts of sebum excretion. (oil for the skin) usually common in teenagers but can happen in later life. Some spots can be caused by allergies. I have contact dermatitis. I'm pretty much allergic to most perfumes and crap. The allergy ****s up my skin and causes spots if it flares up. It's just a case of using all simple products for me and avoiding putting aftershave on my skin, using a gel with little or no perfume, shampoos ect.

Anyway enjoy your skin cancer and people qustioning your sexuality. ;)

    lmao!

I've got pretty bad acne on my back and shoulders... I'd be willing to give this tanning thing a shot, but I don't wanna be pale one day, and then the next morning look like a Latino! People might notice the different :p Maybe I'll just sunbathe a bit more when we have the sun (rarely). hmmm. My mother has always told me to, but I never bothered, lol. We shall see, thanks for the tip!

ps. I'm on Roaccutane, and it's working sloowwwwwly, but surely. Slowly.

Yeah it's working pretty good, but I've been on it for over a year, so I'm getting a bit frustrated that it's still not all clear! But I'm getting there :) Thankya!

I dont really have bad spots but anytime I go away to the sun my skin becomes alot healthier. Defintely the sun/uv rays or something are very benificial for the skin (with no spots being an added bonus :) )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭Tobias Greeshman

The reason it appears to cure your spots is down to the fact that this tan dries out your skin drying up the oil produced by your skin and less bacteria can get into your pores.

If you want a safer and cheaper solution cut down on crisps, chocolate and other greasy foods and wash regularly and you should notice a significant improvement. Sunbeds are NOT good for you and are linked to skin cancer, is this the risk you want to take? Hell I know I wouldn't!

Spots can come from alot of different things.. Depending on where the spots are located can usually indicate what the cause is. Forehead is most likely greasy hair, chin and under your lip is usually a hormonal problem which can be cured by agnus castus (you can get drops from a local health shop - put about 10 drops into a glass of water twice a day and it will clear you in a week). This is really good if you seem to get spots at intervals (if you notice them coming for 2 weeks like every 2 months).

Whatever you do, wash your face with an antibacterial soap and make sure you wash your face every night before you sleep to clear your pores.

For an emergency quick fix for a spot, you could get one of those clean & clear products that get the red out of a spot and clear the infection.

    My two cents.

i had incredibly bad spots as a teenager.
i tried everything, then when i hit 17, for no apparent reason, they went away. completely.

    soooooooo weird.

Antibiotics worked for me anyway, but I had to take them everyday without fail for the whole perscription period. UV light is very good at clearing up spots I read in some pamphlet. Chronic Acne cases (according to the pamphlet) are often advised to try sun bed treatment, or a more localised, medical version.. either way, some natural sunlight will work as well over a period of time..

I shower every morning and rarely miss one. Probably miss 1 shower a month. I still have had spots the last 6 years. They're just around the area you shave on the face and also the forehead. Just feeling my face now and it is full of greece. The work I do doesn't help but it has to be done. I literally have a soaking wet T-Shirt after 4 hours work and no matter how fit I am the sweat/greece pours out of me. Most of the greece on my face comes from the nose but I don't get spots on the nose.

I would wash my face at night if it is greesy but it doesn't help. I'm 19 and shave every Monday/Tuesday, which leaves enough hair to hide the spots by the weekends. I'm an ugly f**k early in the week and not so bad by the weekend.

I'd do anything to wake up with a clear face tomorrow. I'd be too embarrased to walk into a tanning shop but I will certainly try to get as much sun as possible. I'd have to wait the best part of a year for that though in this country.

I haven't got severe acne, just about 3-10 "clean" spots on my face at one time usually. A lot of them are "under the skin" spots in that you can't pick them and are usually pretty sore and uncomfortable. There's a different treatment for every different case I suppose. I've tried all the popular creams and stuff which just make it worse.

    *joins ugly peoples anonymous*
I've got moderate acne. I first tried benzoyl peroxide. Worked fine other then the fact it ripped my skin off (er...ish)...

Went on antibiotics instead a year and a half ago. They work well until you become immune to them. Then you have to change. Then the process begins again. And when you come off them for a few days even the little bastards invade with greater numbers then ever and it takes at least a month to undo the damage.

I wash every single day. I'm hoping they'll disappear in a few years (teenage acne)

Last I heard sunbeds did more damage then good... can irritate the skin causing it to get worse.. or something... I dunno...

Just came to the end of a 6 month course of antibiotics...gotta go to the doctor to get some more...joy...
