Virtual Visa...excellent idea

Hey all, i don't know if anyone has posted about this already...i ran a search didn't turn up anything...

Did anyone read yesterday in the Sunday World internet pullout about the 3V virtual credit card that is to be introduced by Permanent TSB?

This 'credit card' will be for people who don't own a traditional credit card or are afraid to shop online because of the risks associated. Ireland is the first country in the world to pilot this idea.

It hasn't been launched yet, it's on a trial at the moment but in the near future you will be able to sign up for the prepaid visa. You don't need a bank account because although it works the same way as a credit card but you are able to top-up your account with prepaid vouchers. The voucher will contain a 16 digit number that can be used to shop online with no risks attached.

It's a great idea...think of it as when prepaid mobile phones were introduced (think of the traditional credit card as being a billed phone account and the 3V card being on the same line as prepaid accounts)...There is no risk of building up debt

"Ireland is the first country in the world to pilot this idea." That's a damn lie really - America have had a very similar system for several years now.

I have one of these cards, I signed up for a trial a while ago. They do what they say on the tin - though they were a bit awkward at first with only two shops supporting the top-up vouchers...

Yeah.. made a post about it this morning!

    Tis an excellent idea though...

it is a good idea, but imo i compare it to bringing out a new model vhs player when dvd is so popular. most people i know have credit cards and wouldnt really bother with something like this. the security side of things would appeal to me, but again most people i know wouldnt really think that much about it.

also is it hard to get a credit card? i have a student card so it was a matter of proving i have a credit rating of "bum". im just curious is it stricter in the real world?

    Fraid it is!

Log onto Top Up Club and clicking Voucher Details brings you straight to the 3V.ie website actually!

    Also, terms and conditions:
Please note that puchasing a 3V necessitates Top-up Club passing your personal details to our partners, 3V Transaction Services Ltd, a registered data processor. 3V transaction Services Ltd. will use the data it receives solely and exclusively in the processing of the purchase of the 3V voucher.

Terms and conditions apply. The 3V Virtual Visa Voucher is issued by permanent tsb, one of the largest banks in Ireland, in association with VISA and 3V Transaction Services Ltd. permanent tsb is a trading name of Irish Life & Permanent plc which is regulated by the Irish Financial Services Regulatory Authority.

You're right... absolutely nothing to do with 3V whatsoever! Try reading the fine print next time! ;)

    Point taken?! :p

    Ohhhh.. newbie getting fresh?!

And a practically identical topic title.. and claiming how useful the Virtual Visa was seems to be pretty close to my topic.

You can do this with AIB already. Pffff.

Without a credit card, Jimbo? Care to point us to documentation which states this so!

I wish they had this 5 years ago, before I had a credit card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,117 ✭✭✭Gazza22

!! lol ;) ....sorry basquille, i only said it because i didn't know Top-up club was associated. And yes a newbie is getting fresh lol...i hate about half of the mods anyway so who cares

Whats the point in getting a Top-up club card? Why not just use the 3V service thats there...well maybe people already have one or have an agent near them...but the way you were talking basquille, you could reason that you couldn't have a 3V card without involving topupclub

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

actually you dont need a top -up club card, tsb have their own 3V plastic swipe card.which you can get from them.

the top up club only has the added benefit of the user being able to pick up points every time they buy phone credit. you can in turn use your points to buy a 3v voucher.

    Ahhh right!

Shame i'm not a TSB customer..!

I preferred AIB's scheme of disposable credit card numbers.

With TSB's scheme, if you top up your account a good bit, people can still get their hands on your number and empty your account.

3.7 Can I transfer unused credit onto another 3V Voucher™?[back to top]

No. Unused credit cannot be transferred to another existing or new 3V Voucher™. You must apply for a refund of any unused credit and a redemption charge of €2.50 will apply.
5.8 What happens to funds left on my 3V Voucher™ before and after it expires?[back to top]

Funds left on a 3V Voucher™ before and after expiry can be refunded by filling out the 3V Voucher™ redemption form available online and posting it to:

    3V Transaction Services Ltd.
    P.O. BOX 9835, Dublin 1

There is a €2.50 redemption fee to redeem any unused funds left on your 3V Voucher™.

The damn voucher expires at the end of the next calendar month in which you buy it.

    Yeah.. saw that!

Credit expires after the end of the next calender month after you purchase it or something like that, right? (EDIT: Posted this before you edited yours)

Best to find out the price for what you want first! Then purchase credit for that amount.

Me thinks AIB have something like this, at the mo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,083 ✭✭✭✭Stark

AIB's scheme works with a normal credit card. Instead of entering in your actual credit card number on an internet site, you have a method of generating a fake credit card number from your actual number which works for just one purchase. There's no prepay involved, and no seperate accounts (so no getting ripped off with conditions like the ones above).

It's totally different to TSB's scheme.

An AIB product that does not end up screwing you? .... how intrigueing

you dont have to be a member of TSB to have their 3V card to the best of my knowledge.

I've used the card twice. It's a bit expensive at €4/€5 a pop.

One annoying thing is you can't sign up for any betting sites with it apparently.

Also, some shops like amazon will take a euro off you at the checkout to check the card works. They try to instantly give this back to you, but they can;t with these cards. They will end up charging you the initial euro (or pound or dollar, i presume depends on the site- i bought from amazon.fr) + your order total. Kinda annoying if you're near the end of your credit on the card.
