    Who are you playing with?

Let the assistant manager handle training, hire loads of coaches though!

I play 4-4-2. With wingers at half runs. One central midfielder with attacking, creative freedom and forward runs all pritty high.

And the other Defensive, few forward runs and hard tackling! Worked for me so far :)

I assume you are playing football manager 2005? (not as silly a question as it may sound as all versions of CM, FM and webgames are discussed here)

4-4-2 is generally the most stable tactic. You can play around with it too, changing the midfield to a diamond, dropping players back, pushing them forward, etc.

If you are playing 3-5-2, you are going to be exposed unless you keep an eye on your opponent. If you are playing 3 central defenders sitting together at the back, and your opponent is playing 2 up front, you can have 2 defenders man marking and 1 on zonal. It helps if you have one midfielder running back to cover the forward runs of the opponents midfield too. Your wingers might need to do some tracking back also.

Swamping midfield doesnt always work, because a ball over the top, or a punt down the wings can carve you open.

Personally i play a 4-5-1 and have great success with it. You have to have a decent striker (preferably with good heading, jumping, strength, stamina, finishing, positioning) that i use as a target man. He is supported by 1 free roaming AMC and a forward thinking MC. Wingers are very important and i focus passing down both wings - the aim to get the ball into the striker asap.

This is actually rather similar to the way that chelsea play, and while defensively strong is not a negative tactic.

Best thing you can do thouogh is watch the way your opponent is playing and try to cover the holes in your formation while exploiting the ones in his.

I play 4-4-2 with two defensive centre mids and wingers at half-way running up top. Gave both wingers free roles and I'm reaping the rewards at the moment. I have plenty of creativity, but my defense seems leaky (don't think it has to do with the tactics, its a player thing as far as i can see).

Its an easy mistake to make, but if you have your defenders man marking, they really should have a good marking skill. Also, if the attacker is a pacy, tricky player, then having your lumbering gary-doherty-alike player chasing after him might not work too well. Another thing to watch for is if the striker drops deep - this can pull your defender out of position, leaving the way open for an attacking midfielder.

Common sense stuff really, but just try and make sure that your defenders have reasonable positioning, marking, pace, strength, jumping, tackling.

The best thing is definitely let your assistant do the training. I play 4-1-3-2 with the three midfielders all making forward runs. Seems to work well with stronger teams but not so well with the weaker.

When your three midfielders are making runs forward, you need a good defensive midfielder to cover. I currently have Ledley King for Man City and hes excellant for playing this position.

I play 4-1-3-2 myself with Freddy Guarín playing in the DM position. He bangs in the goals from distance.

never let your assitant handle training, he will destroy your players.
