At present we use our webhost for mail accounts, but with the increasing amounts of SPAM, I think it's time to set up our own internally and apply some aggressive SPAM filters.

I can modify the MX records pretty easily.

We've got a few old PCs kicking around (P2's) this should be ok? I haven't set up a mail server before, what's the best software to use? Linux?

    Any advice would be great...

You could run linux or freeBSD (apparently runs better on the latter as thats what sendmail was created on/for) and use sendmail with Milter to filter your mail.

    /edit: here's a link spam filter add-ons http://spamlinks.net/filter-server-addon.htm

For computer specs - it depends on the number of mailboxes/email that the server will have to handle.

what webhost are you using? Many provide an optional add-on to tackle spam - usually for just a small fee.

I would go with axer on this one. Sendmail on freeBSD should be grand on a P2 just make sure you load it out with ram

    Postfix/Amavisd/Spamassassin/ClamAV (& Razor/DSPAM) setup.

Note the above is just for a mail gateway.. but its definitely worth reading anyway.. for POP3/IMAP take a look at Courier or Cyrus, and Squirrelmail is pretty much the de facto webmail interface.. its a lot of work setting all that lot up but should be worth it in the end :)

Yep i'd have to agree, i use squirrel mail (spelling?) for my webmail on www.stevetrek.com when I cant get access to a pop3 mail proggie or the pc at home. Rocks, very configurable too.
