I havent decided for definite where to go on hols this summer and despite some reservations about the tsunami myself and boyfriend are thinking about going to thailand for hopefully two and a half weeks in august or september.

we're planning on just booking a flight and two nights in bangkok and travelling around from there.

Was wondering where to get the best value in flights.
Also what parts (that werent affected by the tsunami) are best to go to. Looking for the less commercial places if possible.
What's it like for getting around? are there any places we should avoid.

Was thinking about combining thailand with vietnam or maybe cambodia, has anyone done this or been to these places.

You will be paying around 700-800 euro for flights. They don't come much cheaper anywhere really.
Phuket and Phi Phi where the only areas that got damaged quite badly. Phuket is fully operational now with only a few bars closed on the beach front and Phi Phi still has quite a bit of work to be done. The most commercial locations in Thailand are Phuket and Pattaya.
I would suggest going to Koh Samui/Koh Phangan/Koh Tao and even Phi Phi as I hear the beaches are even more beautiful than normal after the Tsunami. I will certainly be going to visit Phi Phi again in a few weeks time.
You should probably avoid the Cambodia/Vietnam journey because you don't have alot of time for ass numbing journeys unless you decided to fly. There is plenty to do down south in 2 and 1/2 weeks.

I would suggest avoiding Phuket and Pattaya. The above places mentioned above are lovely Islands and have plenty of activities. If you want to go to a different country, you should keep Laos in mind. Laos is up the top of Thailand and is alot easier to get too.

    Enjoy,
    Mark
