I was wondering if anyone knows of an OSS virus scanner (with similar functionality to Symantec or Sophos etc).

I have Googled "ClamWin" here but am not sure how good it is.

Does anyone use "ClamWin" or know how good it is?

Any other suggestions for an OSS antivirus package?

I use clamav on my Linux machines-it does the job, but there's nothing "spectacular" about it, mostly as its intended for use on mail servers, not desktops.

Clamwin, I find, is a very nice program. I can run it entirely from my pendrive, no installation nessescary, and I use it to complement native Windows programs such as AVG, etc., when I'm scanning machines.

There are other, commerical, Linux virus scanners, but once again these are mail server/firewall solutions.

Linux, if you secure it properly, keep tabs on security updates for your distro, and practice safe browsing, is quite resistant to virus'.

Also, look for and install chkrootkit and tripwire. These cover other vulnerable areas in Linux. chkrootkit does what it says and checks for root kits, while Tripwire monitors your machine for any unauthorised changes of files.

As far as I know ClamWin doesn't actually do On-Access scanning which may be an important issue for you if your mail server doesn't also check. Currently i'm using sophos on my linux server as UCD has a site licence, although the automatic upgrades don't work as UCD don't bother publishing the auto-upgrade data for linux. I'll be switching to ClamAV in the summer when I change the server over to FreeBSD. It apparently integrates very nicely with Samba too.
