Cycle courier jobs in Dublin

I just got one (my ideal job smile.gif), but i didn't seem to be able to find info on boards about it. Now i share my knowledge:

I checked out goldenpages.ie and got addresses of some of the companies. The hard part was finding them. I prefered to call into them rather than phone up, which suits better because they generally seem to have forms to fill out anyway. I got a job after trying only a few, so i didn't find many of these:

    Cyclone Couriers
    6 Stephens Street
To get to this place start on Georges Street. Stephens street starts opposite the pub JJ's.

    Streetlink Couriers
41 Lombard st East, Dublin 2
Go along Pearse Street until you get to the train station. To your left is Lombard St. Streetlink is above the Deli "Lunch!"

    <Don't know name>
There's one on Leeson Street beside Coopers Restaurant. They didn't need anyone when i called in a few weeks ago, but he said to call back at the end of May.

    Road Runner Couriers
    24A Erne st upr
Don't know if these guys are still there. I didn't find any bell to ring once i'd found the door. Erne street is a left shortly after pearse station. The door is just to the left of the post office on erne street, but you'd maybe be better off ringing them to see if they're still in business.

    DHL
If you continue down Erne street, you'll get on to Holles st., and from here you take a right and you'll see DHL. When i asked them, they said they wanted someone with experience, which i have none. Yet.

    Action Couriers
    33 Herbert lane
Again, I dont know if these guys exist anymore, but if you go down Baggot st., and take a left onto Herbert Street, and then a right into Herbert lane. There's no sign posting, but it's the red brick building and not very far down the lane, as someone that lives there told me.

I found another on I think Fitzwilliam lane. I forget what it's called, but if you're at Government buildings on Merrion St, Fitzwilliam Lane is directly opposite you. It's at the end and turn right. When I asked they didn't need any pushbike couriers, but if it's september when you read this, you might get lucky there.

I located some others on the North side of the city, but didn't have to go that far myself. If i find the names of them around here somewhere i'll post them up with where i think they are.

here's a map website if you want to find places not on this list (and add to the list).

    Good luck.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. Is it payed well? Whats the going rate?

Oh, right, forgot to talk about the green. I haven't started my job yet, so i can't give specific info.

There are variants on how you get payed AFAIK. Either you get a base rate, or you get payed by how many drops you do. I think €2 is the going rate per drop atm. So you'd need about 35-40 drops a day. Trouble is with people going on holiday, and students saturating the suply of couriers in the summer, you might have trouble getting that.

It's meant to be one of the most dangerous jobs around... so I hear anyways :)

I figure it's no added danger to me. Seeing as I always cycle around town anyway, i'd have been subjected to any danger i'm likely to encounter already.

just dont be in such a rush,
cycle courier came through a bunch of people crossign the road at about 20mph,
didnt give a fook as they all jumped out of the way,
stopped fairly quick when he seen me drawing my arm back with my motorbike helmet in it.

basically im saying be careful, people and cars disregard biukes the more bikes disregard them, so the more in a rush you go the more likely you are to piss people off,
and just becuase they arent in a car doesnt mean they have to get out of your way.

This often happens to me at the bottom of grafton street at the Molly Malone statue, cos it's often a green light for me, but no cars means people cross the road anyway without looking. I think it's a group mentality that if someone else is crossing the road, then it must be safe.

I've been doing this job a few weeks now, so decided to post here again.
It's as enjoyable a job as i thought it would be, but i've had mostly great weather to do it in, so why would i complain?

    Anyway, here's a checklist:
    • A Helmet. You're cycling nine hours of the day. Don't be stupid enough to think that it'll make you look uncool.
    • A decent lock that you can wrap around your waist, and a key tied to your wrist so that you don't have to waste time putting your hand in your pocket.
    • Sunglasses. Not just for the sun. I've had many insects fly into my eyes when i forget to put them back on.
    • Water. Obviously, this is thirsty work. Travel light. You don't need a big bottle, you can fill it up at any pub.
    • Spare pen. For getting signatures. If you're prone to losing/forgetting things like that.
    • Raingear. This is optional really. Catch the weather, and see if you need it on a given day.
    • Chocolate. For energy.
    • Lunch. Bring sandwiches. It's cheaper. You can eat them in the nearest place to you that looks comfortable.

I haven't had any crashes, but they are quite common from what i've heard from people. Here's a post i found. The advice is assume everyone on the road is an idiot. You will encounter these idiots regularly so get used to it.

In terms of the area covered, most of the jobs seem to be around Stephens Green, Dame Street, Merrion Square, Baggot street, Harcourt Street and surrounding areas.

I'm the only pushbike in the place where i work, so there isn't any preferential treatment, but in a big company with about 30 pushbikes, most jobs seem to be allocated to the people who've been around longest, and are not just working the job for the summer. I don't know how you'd make any money on the bottom rung of the ladder like that, cos i get a basic, not commision.

When you started off as a courier, how did you know the name of every single street in town?
