    What happens is:

If I open it in winamp, it plays, I hear the sound, but there's no picture.

If I open it with DivX player, it says "File cannot be opened, Unknown Exception caught".

I've no problem playing any other mpg or any other files at all for that matter. Can anyone help?

    Thanks

Sounds like a codec problem. Download gspot, it will tell you what codec you need and if you have it installed.

Make sure that you open the visualisation/video screen before hand. This somethime doesn't happen automatically with winamp. I suggest Media Player Classic or VideoLan. I haven't found anything yet that VideoLan couldn't play. Media Player Classic has a better interface though and will play anything as long as you have the correct codec installed, but videolan doesn't need codecs.

Ciaran, I downloaded GSpot (thanks for that), but I'm not sure where to fo from here. Once I enter the path, it tells me "File is MPEG (.MPG/.MPEG/.VOB)" , which I already knew. I tried tusing the "Play using associated player" function, but the problem is the same.

I must have the codec to play mpg files since I have loads of other mpg files which I've no problem playing. But just in case, is there somewhere I can download a wad of them?

    Thanks

On the right under video it should have name:xxxxx. This will be the codec needed for it.

If that doesn't work, get VLC it will play anything.

Many video formats allow for extensions in terms of codec used, as such you may be able to play one file in that format but not another. A common case being able to play AVI files, but not AVI files using the DivX codec.
